From the same commercial establishment where the child had come out, a father was running anxiously, accompanied by the mother, who was crying loudly in fear that the worst had happened to her child.
Everyone was grateful, both the child who had been saved and her parents, as well as the driver who had lost control of the vehicle.
The child's parents insisted that Lowo N'air receive a reward for his kind act, but he refused, saying he had done no more than his duty.
The car owner, apologizing to the child's parents, stated that there had been a problem with the vehicle's brake system and that was why he had lost control, only managing to stop after crashing into a pole. He was an egg deliveryman.
Unfortunately, with the impact, many eggs were broken. Unable to offer a more suitable reward for the young Lowo, and feeling embarrassed, he offered the broken boxes of eggs, saying that there might be some intact ones among them.
Lowo wanted to refuse, but then remembered that he wasn't helping with anything at his friend Smile's house and that the eggs his friend had bought the day before had already run out. So, he ended up accepting, but later refused because he couldn't take them.
The driver asked for his address, and Lowo said not to worry about it; he would find a way to get the eggs to him. After all, it wasn't really a fitting reward for someone who had saved a child from being run over.
After giving his address, Lowo went back to his home.
An hour later, his reward arrived. The egg deliveryman had borrowed a car since his own had been taken away by a tow truck for repairs. Now he was delivering the boxes of eggs he had promised to Lowo.
As he took the first box from the vehicle and approached the modest house where Lowo lived, he was struck by the level of poverty. He began to think how that young man must be so honorable to not even accept a monetary reward from the child's parents.
"Please, young man, what is your name? In the rush and amidst everything happening at that moment, I forgot to ask."
"My name is Lowo N'air. And what is your name, sir?"
"You can call me Baron of Eggs. After all, that's what I've been doing for almost my whole life."
"Nice to meet you, Mr. Baron, and thank you very much for these boxes of eggs you're giving me."
"No need to thank me, Lowo. After all, you saved me from a big problem. I'm the one who should be thanking you, and I apologize for not being able to give you a better reward. But in the future, I will definitely give you something you like."
"You don't need to worry about that, Mr. Baron. These boxes of eggs you're giving me are more than enough as a reward."
And, bidding farewell, the Baron of Eggs went on his way.
Despite everything that had happened, Lowo N'air was happy with the reward. There were four boxes of eggs he had received, and that was a lot of eggs.
The best part was that the hiding place was ideal for him to store the egg he had laid.
Lowo began to read the information on the egg box and discovered that each of those boxes contained 400 chicken eggs. Since there were four boxes, it meant he had received 1600 eggs. According to his thoughts, it was likely that a large portion of those eggs had not been broken.
The problem was that if he started removing the trays one by one, he might cause some accidental breakage, so he decided to look only at the top tray.
The eggs in the top tray were cracked, and taking advantage of the fact that some of them had yolk leaking out of the shell, he decided to make an omelet.
He ate until he was full and decided not to open the other boxes until his friend Smile arrived. Then he went to where he had hidden the egg he had laid, which was wrapped in notebook pages inside a sock, put it inside the box of eggs he had opened and checked.
He managed to place it well under the first three trays so that no one would suspect anything except that the egg was very covered.
He decided to remove the paper and then the sock and noticed that the egg was much smaller than the ones he had received. He felt grateful and relieved to notice this difference.
Evening came, and his friend Smile arrived with his usual good humor, but it was evident from his face that his day had not been good enough.
"Hello, Smile, what happened to you? Why do you look so strange?"
As always, Smile was never the bearer of bad news.
"It's nothing, my friend, just a little stumble. I hurt my foot a bit, that's all. And what about you? What have you been up to during the day?"
Before he finished his sentence, young Smile noticed the four boxes of eggs but didn't suspect they were actually filled with eggs.
"Wow! What are you doing with all this cardboard? Planning to sell it? Although it's a good idea to think about it."
"No, Smile. Something very interesting happened today."
They talked until late into the night, and now Smile was happy because something good had finally happened in Lowo N'air's life.
Imagining various ways to make money from those eggs, and forgetting the fact that most of them were probably broken.
"You know, Lowo, I never imagined in my life that one day you would be considered a hero."
Embarrassed, Lowo replied:
"You know very well, Smile, that I'm really not a hero. And I didn't deserve any reward. All I did was prevent a child from suffering a lot. And I would do that for anyone. I don't think that makes anyone a hero. It just makes us feel a little more human… Human and happy."
