章 5: Chapter 5

Riverwood trader, 8 AM

Lucan Valerius had just opened his shop allowing me to be the first customer of the morning.

"Welcome, we got odds and ends, that sort of thing." Lucan said with some gloom, you can see that the store was ransacked and many things were still damaged.

"Don't worry, we're still in business, just had a run in with some thieves not long ago, you're lucky I still have wares to sell." Lucan said while rearranging some items back onto their shelves.

The store had much more shelves and all the items for sale were out in the open, unlike in the game.

"I'm looking for a Spell Tome of Clairvoyance." I said while looking around at the other wares, nothing interested me other than a few enchanted rings locked away in a glass case.

Interestingly, I could understand what the enchantment's functions were, but I had no idea how it worked. It was like instinct, I knew exactly what it did, but it's strange patterns alluded me.

"Those have all been appraised, so they're not cheep." Lucan pointed out while looking for the Spell Tome I need among the books on the shelf.

"Do you have unappraised items?" I asked, I could potentially get a job appraising items, or find good items for cheap.

"No, I don't like to take those risks, though you may be able to find some in Whiterun." Lucan replied as he dusted off a book and placed it on the counter.

"it's 160 septims to buy, but I can rent it out to you for 15 septims a day." It seems my earlier visit yesterday had instilled some trust in him.

"Then I'll rent it." I said and took out some coins from the pouch, I didn't need the book itself as I could learn it very quickly, though I still decided to rent it rather than read it now to avoid suspicion.

I also rented the Oakflesh, Fury, Frostbite, Lesser Ward, and Raise Zombie Spell Tomes. 100 septims all together as a few were a little more expensive to rent.

"Don't bite off more than you can chew." Lucan said doubtful of my ability to learn so much within a day.

"I'm just doing some research and was hoping to find the answer within these books." I said while he tied the stack of books with a string to keep them together.

"If so, maybe a magic theory book would also be useful, let me see what I have." Lucan went back to the shelf and brought a small stack of books.

"Enchanter's Primer, Basic Spell Theory, Mysteries of the Soul Cairn, Alchemist's Encyclopedia, 101 Common Mistakes..." Lucan went through them one by one, each had some interest to me.

"How much for all of them." I asked, knowledge was literally power in Skyrim, so carrying a lot of gold around with no way to defend myself was unwise.

"They're not particularly valuable, so I'll take 50 septims for all of them a day." Lucan said as I began counting the coins, I now had 250 septims left for food or should I need to move out of Alvor's house to the Inn.

Speaking of food, despite the lack of seasoning and cooking techniques, the food tastes absolutely blissful in Skyrim, likely another effect that Mana has on the world.

'Knowing my past life gives me something to compare to, it's not surprising that no one has mentioned the world being so vibrant due to magic in the books I have read.' It was an amusing feeling, like everything in the world was a mystery again and questions kept drowning me in curiosity.

"Do you by any chance have a lock?" I asked, I was planning on practicing my lockpicking skills using one.

"I do, I had ordered some recently as people have been worrying about the increase of bandits nearby." Lucan said while taking out a few cheap metal locks that seemed sturdy.

"I'll take some of those too." They weren't expensive, so I gladly bought some for later.

"Alright then, you're all set, come back again!" Lucan said as Camila came down stairs from the second floor of the building.

As I was leaving I heard them start the famous golden claw dialog, I was surprised that it didn't happen when I came in like in the game.

I simply said that I would take a look, if I ever went that way and didn't make any promises.

When I stepped out of the Riverwood trader, I was greeted again by the lively atmosphere of Riverwood. The birds were chirping and bugs were buzzing, giving the sunlight filled forest village a stunning appearance.

The trees were a mix of coniferous and deciduous trees that towered into the sky nearly 200 ft and in width, two grown men would struggle to wrap their hands around them.

The crown of the trees blocked out the sky allowing for streaks of light to cascade in beautiful contrasting colors.

I returned to Alvor's house where I put down my new belongings and began reading. Alvor's wife, Sigrid, was cooking a meal for everyone, I had decided to pay them for the meal to leave a better impression.

Hadvar wanted to refuse, but I insisted on lessening their burden. It took longer than expected to read all the books, also giving me a splitting headache together with nausea as my mental energy seemed to be overdrawn again.

Seeing as I was in no shape to do anything, I decided to sleep early and continue at a later time.

When I woke up, I was informed it was already evening, prompting me to return the books I borrowed. After eating some leftovers from dinner I sat back down on my bed and started digesting the new information I have learned.

In one of the basic magic theory books I read was an interesting technique of continuously charging and discharging Mana in the body. Over a prolonged period of time, one would see improvements in their Mana regeneration and Mana capacity while also increasing mental fatigue.

I followed the technique and soon mastered it, as it was relatively simple, enough to distract myself with thoughts on magic theory.

I now had a basic understanding of the fundamental principles of all the branches of magic, although I found their division to be meaningless as they were all interlinked with each other like organs in the human body.

But the most interesting of all was the Clairvoyance spell. As I had predicted, it allowed me to vaguely peer into the future and see a note worthy moment... Sometimes. Although it was very vague, like a premonition, it would still become an invaluable tool.

When I looked at the principle it worked on, I was surprised to find that there was little explanation as to how it functioned. The spell worked similar to a computer program where you activate a bunch of code and it processes the information before spitting out an answer.

Similarly, the spell used a complex mathematical and arcane formula that it followed to predict future possibilities based on given data of the present.

The formula took up 90% of the book and was not explained at all, though it does say in the tome that there is a another book that gives an explanation as to what the different parts of the formula mean.

Luckily, I can use the spell even without knowing how it works entirely, but I definitely want to find out how they managed to figure out how to predict the future using formulas.
