章 99: Chapter 88.5: A day in Yuki Nakamura’s past

The day was winding down, the sun casting its final golden light across the cityscape, when Yuki Nakamura unlocked the door to her home.

She stepped inside, greeted by the familiar warmth that she had grown accustomed to.

It wasn't just the coziness of the apartment, but the man who awaited her there.

It was her husband, Kenji.

As she closed the door behind her, the scent of dinner wafted through the air. Yuki smiled softly, her heart skipping a beat. No matter how stressful her day had been at work, coming home to Kenji always seemed to make everything better.

Living a life as the leader of the police is not something anyone can do.

Dealing with criminals, murder cases, serial killers, drug dealers is not something you do everyday.

You must be ready to sacrifice everything for the sake of innocent people.

You're not distant from being a hero, and you have too many responsibilities with you.

Luckily, Yuki Nakamura was the only and suitable one for this work, since she was able to do stay calm and vigilant in every situation.

But even a hero like her has her weaknesses.

And one of them was her beloved husband Kenji.

"Welcome back," Kenji's voice called from the kitchen, gentle and filled with warmth.

Yuki removed her shoes and entered the living room, where Kenji stood by the stove, stirring a pot.

The only sound of his voice seemed to have washed off every single line of stress and tiredness from her soul.

Despite her serious and professional appearance , Yuki Nakamura was a really devoted and lovely wife.

She saw her husband and smiled warmly at him.

His apron was a silly one that said 'World's Best Cook'.

It was hung loosely around his tall frame.

His eyes sparkled when they met hers, and that familiar smile stretched across his face, the one that made Yuki fall in love with him all over again.

Kenji worked in a small restaurant down the street near the police department where Yuki Nakamura was working.

"Smells amazing," she said, walking over to him.

"I thought I'd make your favorite," Kenji replied, his tone playful as he leaned down to kiss her on the forehead.

Yuki placed her hand on his chest, closing her eyes for a moment, savoring the brief contact.

She even took a deep sniff while being on his chest, to feel his good smell.

They were still newlyweds, only married a few months, but it felt as though they had known each other for lifetimes.

In those fleeting moments together, they rarely needed words.

"I missed you today," Yuki confessed with an almost sad tone as she stepped back slightly, her hands falling into the familiar pattern of helping set the table.

It seemed like she was waiting the moment to see her husband like a child waits for the end of school lessons.

"I missed you too. It's not the same around here without you," Kenji said, his tone light but with a truth that echoed in both their hearts.

Luckily , he took a free day from the restaurant to prepare a special dinner for his wife.

As they sat down to dinner, Yuki couldn't help but feel a deep contentment wash over her.

Despite the demanding nature of her work, these quiet evenings with Kenji gave her the sense of peace she so often craved.

And that was another reason of why she had chosen her work.

She wanted for everyone to spend peaceful moments like this, that's why she vowed to protect people.

They ate together in companionable silence for a while, enjoying each other's presence without the need for constant conversation.

But as the meal neared its end, Kenji broke the quiet with a question that had been on both their minds for some time now.

"Yuki," he began, his tone soft yet filled with anticipation, "what do you think about us starting a family soon?"

Yuki's heart leaped at the words.

She had thought about it often, the idea of having a child, of expanding their little world.

She was scared about the pregnancy , but she also knew that a baby would've brought her a lot of joy.

It was something they both wanted deeply, something they had discussed even before they got married.

However, she was surprised to see that Kenji brought up the topic.

She didn't expect for him to randomly talk about having a baby.

"I think…" she began, her voice gentle, "I think it's something I want more than anything."

Kenji's face lit up at her response, his eyes gleaming with the kind of joy that only the thought of a future together could bring.

He reached across the table and took her hand, his touch firm but full of love.

For some reason, he was really "impatient" to have a baby.

Yuki thought that he wanted a child because of his enormous love for her.

"I want to have a little family with you, Yuki," he said, his voice filled with emotion. "I can already see it… a little version of us running around."

Yuki chuckled softly, though her eyes misted over with the same vision.

"A little one, huh? Do you think we'll have a boy or a girl?" She said in a lovely tone while still looking her husband's eyes.

Kenji tilted his head with a thoughtful look crossing his face.

"Maybe a girl. Someone as strong and smart as her mother," he said with a teasing grin.

Yuki then rolled her eyes playfully. "Or a boy who's just as caring and kind as his father."

"Or we can try to make both. Or an army of babies." Kenji replied with a playful tone.

They laughed together, the image of a future with children filling the space between them.

They talked for a while about what it might be like, what kind of parents they would be.

Yuki imagined a home filled with laughter, with love, and with the sound of little feet running across the floors.

As the night wore on, they decided to take a walk to their favorite neighborhood spots.

It was one of their favorite evening activities—strolling through the streets, window-shopping, and talking about their day.

The place where they used to take a walk was a small street where shops were open 24/7.

Shops with everything you needed in every moment of the day.

More than that, the place was full of people.

But that night, as they passed a small children's clothing store, something caught Yuki's eye.

"Look," she said, stopping in front of the store's display window.

Inside were tiny clothes, adorable dresses, little shoes, and the smallest jackets Yuki had ever seen.

Her heart swelled with a mixture of longing and hope.

She looked like a child seeing candies in a candy store.

She could picture itz.

The image of her holding her own child, dressing them in these little outfits, watching them grow.

She wanted to experience and savor every single moment of her life, and having a baby would've been one of the first things to do.

The joy of being a mother and give all of your love and soul to raise a little version of yourself.

Everything was new for the strict and professional Yuki Nakamura.

Everyone at work treated her like a boss.

Like someone who had to be feared and respected.

But deep down, she was still a human being with dreams and emotions.

Kenji joined her at the window, his arm slipping around her waist.

"They're so small," he commented softly, his tone filled with the same wonder she felt.

"They are," Yuki agreed, her hand resting on the glass as if she could touch the future they both wanted so desperately.

"I can already imagine that little pink dress on our little daughter. It would be so beautiful on her. Don't you think?" Kenji asked, while placing a hand on her shoulder, hugging her and still looking at the window.

Yuki Nakamura playfully giggled and nodded her head in agreement.

"I think so. It would really suit on… our future baby." She said with a dreamy voice, while her hand gently caressed her own belly.

For a few moments, they stood there, imagining what life would be like if they had a baby.

Yuki's mind was flooded with images of late-night feedings, first steps, and tiny hands reaching up to her.

She could see herself in the role of a mother, holding their child in her arms while Kenji stood by her side, his ever-reassuring presence.

Not even her hard work could separate her from her baby.

She clearly knew that.

"Do you think we'll be good parents?" Yuki asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Kenji turned to her, his gaze soft and filled with conviction. "I know we will be. And no matter what, we'll figure it out together."

Yuki smiled at that, her heart brimming with affection.

She leaned into Kenji, feeling the warmth of his body next to hers, the strength of his love grounding her in that moment.

"We should get going," Kenji finally said, breaking the silence as the night grew cooler. "It's getting late."

Reluctantly, Yuki nodded, and they continued their walk.

But the thought of their future child lingered between them, an unspoken promise of the life they would build together.

As they made their way back home, the conversation shifted to lighter topics like the funny moments of their day, the quirky habits they had begun to notice in each other.

Yet, underneath it all, the idea of a family remained close to their hearts.

When they finally reached their apartment, Yuki paused for a moment before entering.

She looked up at the night sky, stars twinkling faintly above.

She felt a deep sense of gratitude wash over her: for Kenji, for the love they shared, and for the future they would one day create.

Inside, Kenji wrapped his arms around her from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder.

"What are you thinking about?" he asked softly.

Yuki smiled, leaning into him. "Just how lucky I am," she said, her voice full of sincerity.

Kenji pressed a kiss to her temple. "Me too."

They stood there for a while longer, wrapped in each other's warmth, before finally heading inside.

The evening had been perfect in its simplicity—a quiet reminder of the love they shared and the life they were building together.

As they lay in bed that night, Yuki couldn't help but feel a flutter of excitement in her chest.

One day, soon, they would have a child.

And when that day came, she knew their love would only grow stronger.

With that comforting thought, Yuki drifted off to sleep, Kenji's arms wrapped securely around her, the promise of their future keeping her heart at peace.

Yuki was grateful for the life she was living.

A really perfect life.

She had everything.

A good work, a good house, a gentle husband husband who cared for her.

What else was she missing? Nothing.

But nothing is perfect.

The perfection itself is a very big flaw.

And deep down , in the worst shadows of the world, a very big twist was about to change everything.

Yuki had no idea about was gonna happen and the revelations she was about to get.

Something awful.
