The first light of morning was just peeking over the horizon when Madison woke up, Wald's arms still holding her tight. She felt rested and ready to face the challenges ahead. Carefully slipping out of bed, she got dressed quietly and went to the kitchen.
As she entered the busy kitchen, the smells of baking bread, roasting meats, and hearty stews filled her nose. The cooks and servants paid her no mind as she took a plate of sliced venison, fresh berries, and a chunk of crusty bread before going to one of the small dining rooms.
She had just started eating when Wald came in, dressed simply in a linen shirt and leather pants. His eyes looked intense as he stared at her silently for a moment before sitting across from her.
"Something is bothering you," he stated flatly.
Madison set down her fork, meeting his piercing gaze. "I am determined, not bothered. Last night only made me more resolved to stand beside you against the coming darkness."
