章 23: Wand Shopping

Where could Kai find someone to teach him Illusion magic? He didn't know anyone in Lunengard, and he didn't have enough money to hire a private tutor.

'Damn it,' he thought.

Maybe he would have to do as Headmaster Finley suggested and try to learn magic from other elements. The only problem with that was he would have a much harder time compared to the other students.

He left Finley's office frustrated and headed to the library. Kai needed to get some books Wanessa had requested, and he also wanted to try to find books that contained information about Illusion magic.

'Maybe I can learn on my own.'

The library was a vast, quiet place filled with rows of bookshelves that seemed to stretch on forever. Kai approached the librarian's desk and asked for directions to the sections on combat magic and Illusion magic. The librarian, an elderly woman with kind eyes, pointed him in the right direction.

Kai first picked up the books for Wanessa, then began searching for anything on Illusion magic. After a while, he found a few old, dusty tomes that seemed promising. He carried the stack to a nearby table and began to read.

Soon, more and more students showed up in the library. The first-year students went there to get the same books Kai got, the ones Wanessa asked for.

Anyway, hours passed as Kai delved into the intricate details of Illusion magic. The books covered basic principles, glyphs, and even a few simple spells. He took extensive notes, determined to make the most of this self-study approach.

Despite the difficulty, Kai felt a glimmer of hope. The texts were challenging, but not impossible.

The only problem was the short time. Kai had one week to learn at least one useful spell for combat — and Alastor had to like the spell too — which was hard. There were many other subjects to learn at Brainheart Academy, so it wasn't as if Kai could focus only on that.

Anyway, it was late at night when Kai returned to his room, and to his surprise, Trevor was there, using the table to support all the books he was reading.

"How was it at the library? I went there, and the place was packed," Trevor said, looking up and away from his books for a moment.

Kai had a bag filled with books, which he placed near his bed and then jumped onto it.

"It was a nightmare," he said. "I need some sleep. Good night, and good luck with your studies."

"Good night, Kai," Trevor said, returning to his books.

The following day started with Kai taking a good bath, and to his surprise, the bathtub in his bathroom had a spell to warm the water, so it was basically just like the bathroom in his old world.

'Awesome!'

Another good thing was the breakfast. Almost all the students were there. The food was good and it was free, so why not eat it?

The first major event was not a class, but shopping! Kai had yet to get his magical wand — they were not casting spells yet, so that was understandable — and he needed one urgently. Many students had their magical wands because of their noble status, so they stayed in the school to relax before classes started again. Kai and many other first-year students left the city with one of the teachers to go buy their wands.

The teacher who accompanied them was Wanessa. They left the school and went down the mountain toward Lunengard.

"We will get your wands in Lunengard," Wanessa said. "Follow me."

Kai and Trevor walked down the mountain, talking about the many things happening in their lives and how the future was both exciting and uncertain for them.

Something unexpected happened on the way down. Nefarios Lunengard, the silver-haired noble, joined them.

"Hey," Nefarios said, "I don't think we had a decent introduction, but I am Nefarios Lunengard."

It was strange for someone like him to say those things. Kai had already met a few of the nobles studying at Brainheart, and most of them did not want friendship with 'commoners' like Kai and Trevor. Nefarios was one of the most influential nobles there, which made it even more surprising.

"Kai Silverbook," Kai said, extending his hand. "It's a pleasure."

"I am just Trevor."

They greeted each other and started talking on the way to the city. The other students looked on with surprise.

"Why is Nefarios talking to commoners? Did he lose his mind?"

"I don't know. Maybe he is up to something? Or maybe these two are not commoners."

The students whispered among themselves.

As soon as they got to the city, Wanessa led them through Lunengard to a particular part of town. This area was where Arcanists bought all sorts of important things, not just their wands. Kai, Trevor, and Nefarios stayed together the whole time.

"Why don't you have a wand yet? Most nobles already do," Kai asked.

Nefarios looked a bit down. "Family issues, nothing serious."

It was clear Nefarios didn't want to discuss it, so Kai and Trevor let it go and focused on getting their magical wands.

They headed to a district reserved just for Arcanists. A guard was blocking the way, but Wanessa, with her Brainheart teacher's uniform, got in without any trouble. The students also had no problem entering. This neighborhood was dedicated entirely to Arcanists, filled with shops and attractions. Kai had a feeling he'd be going there a lot during his magical journey.

The only reason they were there was to secure their magic wand, so Wanessa ignored all the other shops and attractions and went straight to the places that sold wands.

"You can pick any wand from this shop," Wanessa told the students, "The school will cover the cost."

That wasn't a bad shop. In fact, the wands there were better than most, and the students would certainly use them throughout much of their academic journey.

As they entered the shop, a gentleman helped them choose their wands. That gentleman was a powerful Arcanist who could sense the students' affinity with certain elements and guide them to the wands that made the most sense.

Kai and Nefarios watched Trevor choose some wands that were better suited for Earth magic practitioners, with the help of the shopkeeper.

Nefarios had an affinity for Lightning, a somewhat special element that wasn't so common. Kai knew it well since his father also had a not-so-common element.

'My dad is amazing, it seems,' thought Kai.

When it was Kai's turn to choose a wand, the shopkeeper used his power to understand the elements Kai had an affinity for and guide him to specific wands.

When the shopkeeper touched Kai, he was shocked.
