Ruins. Tollana.
Tollana, which was designated P4X-377 by the Tau'ri, was the planet that the Tollan people had relocated to after some cataclysms on their homeworld forced them to leave. It originally lacked a Stargate, though the Tollans were able to build one with the help of the Nox, an advanced race of xenos we Imperials were avoiding as while they pacifists being one was a choice, and so there was no sense annoying such an advanced race. At least not according to the Inquisition.
The Tollans quickly constructed cities on the planet together with advanced defences to protect them. Alas this wasn't to last as the Goa'uld Tanith, in the service of Anubis, was able to modify the shields on his ship to protect him from the Tollans' ion cannons, and he tried to force them to do the bidding of his master. After Tanith's plan was foiled due to the intervention of SG-1, Tanith razed the planet, killing most of the Tollans.
Unfortunately for the Tollan people who didn't die, Anubis coveted their knowledge, despite his own technological superiority, and so the semi-ascended villain dispatched many of his Jaffa to the planet in order to scour for survivors so that Anubis could interrogate them.
Even though they were a peaceful people the remaining Tollan people formed desperate bands of resistance fighters who waged guerrilla warfare against the Jaffa that were occupying their world.
They didn't have much success according to the information I'd gotten from the Ad-Mech who'd managed to reach this world via the gate and were now picking through the ruins while trying to get information from any humans they found.
Though these remaining Tollans are still extremely reluctant to share their advanced technology with others, a few had apparently come forward to trade what they had for food, medical supplies and a chance to get off-world now that the Jaffa who Anubis had left here as a garrison had been driven away from the gate by the Ad-Mech.
"There are still hunting parties of Jaffa in the ruins of the city" the ranking tech-priest informed me "I am reminded of our time spent in the ruins of the Capital Wasteland only now we have abhumans to battle rather than mutants and insane raiders".
I had no idea if this machine lover had been there or not as I didn't recognise them, but I did recall the Ad-Mech setting up a shrine/base in the museum of technology within that city before it was all cleaned up and new buildings put in place of the rubble.
Currently I was standing inside a similar shrine/base which the cogboys had set up in one of the few remaining government buildings. It wasn't a large operation as most of the Ad-Mech were working to set up our off-world bases and setting up the Imperial colony on Thrax III. Compared to such vital work shifting through the ruins of this society wasn't very important and most of the work was being carried out by a small number of labourers.
Or at least was until a horn was sounded, one naturally made not machine broadcasted, that was followed by an Imperial alarm. The civilian workers began to flee inside and the few cyborg warriors of the machine cult here moved to defend the building.
These were the Skitarii, also known as the Tech-Guard and the Legiones Skitarii, are the cybernetic military forces of the Adeptus Mechanicus Skitarii are used to defend Mechanicus Forge Worlds, manufacturing installations elsewhere in the Imperium and often accompany high-ranking Tech-priests and Magi as their bodyguards. Skitarii also serve as the armed forces that defend the Mechanicus' Explorator vessels that explore the galactic frontier.
The building that the Ad-Mech were using as a base of operations on this world was surrounded by ruins and piles of rubble, which gave the attacking Jaffa some cover as my Imperial followers began shooting. I didn't join in with the fighting right away as I took the time to see how the Jaffa fight. In the show they weren't great warriors, but this was not a TV show.
I soon saw that those closer to the building we're providing cover as more abhuman troops moved forward, but they weren't simply charging us, instead they were moving between bits of cover while their kin fired off enough energy bolts to make sure we kept our heads down. Once they had enough warriors in place I figured that they'd charge us.
Had I had the time or the ability to fully focus, which I didn't since there was a battle taking place, I would have tried peering into the future to see if I was right, only this was not a suitable location for such a thing, so I prepared to fight.
As I freed my weapons the Dark Age of Technology armour that the Ad-Mech had gifted me with deployed itself. The scales of the armour moved almost as a liquid over my body.
I'd been assured that while wearing this armour I would only have to worry about getting struck by anti-tank weaponry and that I would be able to wrestle a space marine if I wished to. Not that I would ever try anything so foolish.
Most of the enemy were being forced to keep their heads down by the Skitarii and members of my household guard. Their spears had a laser weapon attached to them which had a much better rate of fire than the staff weapons of the Jaffa.
As such the enemy were taking many more losses than we were and because my people had on decent armour, even those hit would most likely recover once a medic could see to them. I didn't have vast amounts of soldiers at my command so it was good that I'd invested in keeping them alive.
As the Jaffa horn called out once again the enemy charged and I opened fire with my Volkite Serpenta, this was a pistol variant of a Volkite Weapon that could be wielded single-handed, the Volkite Serpenta was sometimes carried by high-ranking soldiers of the Imperial Army and the Tech-priests of the Mechanicum during the Great Crusade era. In more modern times they were a rare sight and I'd been gifted with one as a token of thanks by the Ad-Mech for some of the lovely tech I'd brought from the Mass Effect universe.
I fired off a few shots, gunning down the Jaffa with ease with the powerful thermal weapon, only there proved to be much more of them than I'd realised so I placed my Volkite weapon on my belt.,
As it became mag-locked in place, I took up Shadowsteel, my Valyrian made sword which had been altered into a power weapon, and used it to fight the Jaffa as they tried to batter with their staffs. Their armour proved no match for the sword, its power field cut through armour as easily as it did flesh and bone.
A Jaffa with a silver symbol on his head attempted to block a downward swing of my sword only for his staff weapon to be cut in two and for the blade of Shadow Steel to go right through his shoulder before removing an entire arm.
Then the horn sang out for a third time and the Jaffa began to retreat. The battle had lasted for what seemed like a very short amount of time.
"Unleash the cybervarren!" a cyborg ordered.
A whistle sounded and varren from the Mass Effect universe that had been upgraded with cheap cybernetic implants were unleashed upon the fleeing Jaffa, unless ordered back they would hunt down and eat those warriors of Anubis who still remained.
Since we'd not had much to do for half a year due to the refitting the Ad-Mech in charge of the varren had been granted enough time to perfect the creatures and breed them in great enough numbers to send them into battle.
I'd wanted to do something like that with direwolves with Westeros. Alas we'd never found enough of the creatures for breeding and the cloning tech on my cruiser was only meant for humans. They would have looked more fearsome than the varren I figured.
"Curious" said one of the tech-priests who was examining one of the few Jaffa I'd slain.
The cogboy pinned down the abhuman with a mostly organic looking leg (the warrior was still bleeding to death and must have gone into shock since he didn't react) and then the machine lover used some tool on the end of a robot hand to remove the Jaffa's silver mark which had decorated his forehead. As he examined it he produced a nozzle from inside his robes which he used to clean off the skin.
"This is the mark of Ba'al rather than Anubis" said the tech-priest "Given that only high ranking Jaffa are granted these marks in metal he must be a commander of some kind. Perhaps the leader of the Jaffa garrison. With him dead we should have an easier time killing the rest of them and securing these ruins".
Since Ba'al took over most of Anubis's holding after the ascended being called Oma Desala, or something like that, locked the semi-ascended Anubis in an eternal battle, it made sense that he'd take over the Jaffa garrison here and have them carry on their work in his name.
The cyborg handed me the emblem which I would keep as spoils of this battle. The Ad-Mech already had their people gathering up the staff weapons, not because they had any use for them, they just wanted the naquadah that was used to power the weapons. Aside from being able to use it to power their own stuff they'd want to return to the Forge-World with as much of the mineral as possible.
As for me I fully intended to support the operation here. I'd send in the Imperial Guard and workforce to cleanse this world of the abhuman menace and to claim any spoils which remained.
