"All of this is a lie," Fiona mumbled more to herself than to Liam, shaking her head even while in his arms. The weight of the accusations felt unbearable against her chest and she couldn't help but feel suffocated.
"Why would she go to such lengths just to defame me and have me leave you? This is cruelty," she said, her voice shaky as tears welled up in her eyes.
Liam watched her in shame as he tightened his embrace, feeling a surge of anger mixed with guilt. All this was his fault. She didn't deserve any of this.
"I'm so sorry, I caused all this," he said, trying to console Fiona while keeping his own emotions in check. The pain in her voice cut through him like a knife. He felt responsible for the turmoil she was experiencing and it pained him to know that he was the reason the woman he loved was in tears.
