The air outside felt electrically charged as we exited the civil affairs bureau, each of us moving as though in a daze following the seismic shift that had just reshaped my entire existence. Chen Xinyi lingered behind, face still etched in stunned disbelief over the devastating blow she'd just suffered.

I couldn't resist the urge to twist the knife a little deeper as we reached the front steps.

"You know, now that I think about it..." I began airly, slanting a sidelong look at the bedraggled woman over one shoulder. "I probably should be thanking you for all those years of icy disdain and emotional neglect."

Chen Xinyi's head whipped up at that, eyes glinting with an unmistakable sheen of desperate hope that I would provide some slim olive branch despite everything. I allowed my lips to curl into a vindictive smirk before delivering the killing blow.
