Chapter 2: The First Hours

The apocalypse wasn't gradual. It didn't creep in like the movies suggested, giving humanity time to adapt. Instead, it struck with merciless efficiency, a storm of chaos and death that left the world unrecognizable within hours.

Eri clutched his knife, the blade trembling in his hand as he crouched behind the supermarket shelf. His breath came in shallow gasps, the reality of his situation crushing him like a weight on his chest. The supermarket, once bustling with life, was now a graveyard. Blood stained the tiled floors, scattered groceries lay abandoned, and the silence was broken only by the occasional groan of the undead.

He couldn't forget the sight of it—mutated men ripping apart shoppers like wild animals. Most of the survivors were killed in those first few moments, but Eri had clung to life. The global announcement he'd watched had rewarded him with this knife, the very tool that had saved his life when two of the monsters came for him. He barely managed to kill them, the blade slipping from his bloodied hands as he fought desperately for survival.

And then came the turn.

The people who hadn't been slaughtered outright began to change. Their skin grew pale and cracked, their movements jerky and erratic as they turned on anyone still human. Bite after bite, scream after scream, the infection spread like wildfire, leaving Eri with no choice but to kill every last one of them.

He had survived. For now.

But the supermarket wasn't safe.

Eri knew what these creatures were. Zombies. Not the shambling, moaning caricatures from the movies but something far worse. These were predators, their strength amplified, their senses sharp, and their hunger insatiable. And worse, some were evolving, like the woman who had just left the store.

She wasn't slow. She wasn't clumsy. She was fast, her movements precise, and she had dodged every strike Eri had made except the last few that merely grazed her.

"They said zombies were dumb…" he muttered bitterly under his breath.

From his hiding spot behind the shelf, Eri peeked out cautiously. The zombie woman stood by the automatic doors, sniffing the air, her head cocked as if listening for him. Her body was riddled with stab wounds, but none had hit the head. None were fatal.

With a grunt, she turned and shambled toward the door. The automatic sensor whirred softly, opening to let her out into the dimming evening.

Eri stayed frozen for a moment, counting the seconds before he dared to move. This was the third time a zombie had left the store, but he wasn't going to take any chances. Not this time.

Quietly, he crept toward the building's backup power supply. The supermarket had already lost general power, running only on a backup generator. With a few swift movements, he shut it down.

The lights flickered and died, plunging the store into near-total darkness. The automatic doors locked with a soft click.

"Now you can only get in if I let you," Eri muttered to himself. It was a small victory, but he'd take it.

Returning to the main floor, Eri grabbed a bag of chips and a carton of milk from the nearest shelf. Breakfast in the apocalypse wasn't much, but it was something.

Sitting down behind another aisle, Eri's thoughts drifted. At first, he'd thought this was some form of divine judgment. Maybe the rapture had come, and the rain that fell earlier had marked the damned for death. But he'd called his pastor before things got too chaotic, and the man had answered.

"If Pastor's still here," Eri whispered bitterly, "it's not the rapture."

That left other explanations. A government conspiracy? Population control? It made sense until the global announcement mentioned the word "universe." This wasn't local. This wasn't national. This was galactic.

Eri let out a heavy sigh, staring at the darkened supermarket around him. "Man, I'm going to die here," he muttered.

Outside, the zombies weren't the only threat. The Mutated Humans were far worse. Deformed and monstrous, with unnatural strength and intelligence, they were a nightmare come to life. He'd seen one kick a car like it was a soccer ball, sending it crashing into a building. Another had ripped a man apart with its bare hands.

He shivered at the memory.

The sun was setting now, casting long shadows across the aisles. Eri's heart sank as he realized the night would bring even greater horrors.

SLAM!

The sound jolted him out of his thoughts. His knife was in his hand before he even realized he'd drawn it. Heart pounding, Eri pressed himself against the shelf, straining to hear.

'What was that?' he thought, his mind racing.

The noise had come from the front of the store. Slowly, carefully, Eri peeked around the corner.

His stomach dropped.

The shelf he had pushed against the door earlier had collapsed, and the door itself had been forced open.

'No… no, no, no…'

Eri's grip tightened on the knife as he scanned the shadows. His eyes darted left and right, searching for the intruder. And then he saw it.

At first, he thought it was a child. Small, humanoid, and standing eerily still in the darkness. But as his eyes adjusted, the details became clear.

The thing was holding a knife, its blade gleaming faintly in the dying light. Its eyes glowed red, two pinpricks of malice that locked onto Eri's trembling form. Its face…

It was a doll.

A human-like doll, its features unnervingly perfect and lifeless, like something out of a nightmare.

Eri's breath hitched. His childhood fear came rushing back with a vengeance. "Child's Play," he whispered, the words barely audible. The terror clawed at his chest, threatening to choke him.

The doll tilted its head, the motion unnaturally fluid.

"Ok," it said, its voice high-pitched and mocking.

Eri's blood ran cold.

"If you won't come out, Eri…"

It took a step forward, the sound of its bare feet against the tiled floor echoing through the store.

"…then I'll come to you."

Eri bit back a scream, his mind scrambling for a plan. This wasn't a zombie. This was something else. Something worse.

The doll raised its knife, the blade catching the faintest glint of moonlight filtering through the store's windows.

"Come on, Eri," it cooed, its voice dripping with malice. "Let's play."

Eri tightened his grip on his own knife, his knuckles white with tension. His body trembled, every instinct screaming at him to run. But there was nowhere to go.

The doll moved closer, its steps slow and deliberate, each one sending a jolt of fear through Eri's body.

And then it stopped.

Its head snapped to the side, as if hearing something Eri couldn't. A moment later, it lunged.

Eri barely had time to react. He rolled to the side as the doll's blade slashed through the air where his head had been moments before.

The doll turned on him with unnatural speed, its glowing eyes narrowing.

"You can't hide forever, Eri," it hissed.

Eri scrambled to his feet, his heart hammering in his chest. The doll lunged again, and this time, Eri swung his knife in desperation. The blade sliced across the doll's arm, but instead of slowing it down, the wound seemed to excite it.

"Good!" it laughed, its voice echoing eerily in the dark store. "Let's see what you've got!"

Eri had no choice. He had to fight.

With a guttural scream, he charged at the doll, his knife aimed for its head.
