In the evening, Lucy strolled along the riverbank back to her rented house, the tranquil waters reflecting the fading hues of the setting sun.
"Mystogan and Laxus sure carry weighty reputations."
"Erza and Kyros turning out to be Fairy Tail's S-class mages, no wonder they wield strength akin to monsters."
"Especially Kyros, renowned even among the esteemed S-rank mages."
Curiosity gnawed at her, prompting Lucy to inquire about Kyros's method of dealing with Laxus, yet Mirajane merely chuckled, evading a direct response.
"It's no surprise he dared to confront the train head-on. I'm beginning to grasp the power dynamics within the guild now."
Lucy's mind sketched a mental diagram of the guild's power structure: the guild master reigning supreme, followed by Kyros and the enigmatic uncle, then Erza, Laxus, and Mystogan.
Further down the hierarchy lay Natsu, Gray, and herself, while the rest filled the miscellaneous slots.
"Hehe, perhaps one day I'll seize the chance to ascend to S-class mage status, and maybe even earn widespread acclaim."
"Alright! Tomorrow, I will start striving even harder!"
"Crack!" Lucy arrived back at her house, greeted by the sight of Natsu vigorously sweating on her living room floor, engrossed in sit-ups, with "Happy" cheerfully lifting dumbbells nearby.
"You're back!"
"You can go back to your..."
"Ah ah ah ah ah!!"
"Stinky!!" Lucy recoiled, leaping up and accidentally stepping on Natsu's abdomen.
"Are you trying to build muscles or something? Return to your own place!"
"What are you saying? Aren't we a team? Here, this is for you, since you like pink." Natsu grinned, presenting a pink dumbbell to Lucy.
Lucy protested loudly, "I have zero interest in dumbbells! And I never said we were still a team! We disbanded, remember?"
Ignoring Lucy's words, Natsu planted his hands firmly on the ground, launching into a flurry of push-ups. "To surpass Erza and Laxus, you need strength. To best Kyros, you need strength greater than Kyros's. A sturdy physique is essential."
"Indeed!"
Natsu's eyes narrowed with envy as he glanced at Kyros's physique, his muscles rippling with strength. With a determined fist, he vowed to shatter that image into fragments.
Kyros's impressive physique served as Natsu's inspiration, driving him to sculpt his own body to match.
Tears welled up in Lucy's eyes as she pleaded, "This doesn't concern me, just go home already!"
Mid-push-up, Natsu halted abruptly.
"I've made up my mind!"
"Huh?"
"I'm taking on an S-class mission!"
"Happy" produced an S-rank mission scroll.
Lucy gasped in disbelief. "What's happening?! The second floor is reserved for S-rank mages only, isn't it?"
"Happy" replied calmly, "I sneaked through."
"The sneaky cat!"
Natsu rose to his feet, dressing quickly. "This will be my first S-rank mission, and we've chosen the cheapest one. Still, the reward is a hefty 7 million Jewels."
Lucy shook her head. "We're not ready for S-rank missions."
Natsu grinned. "If we succeed, the old man will finally recognize my strength."
Lucy slumped into a chair, sighing. "You're always so reckless. Can't you at least follow the guild's rules?"
"If I did, I'd never get to do S-rank missions."
"Well, count me out. You two can handle it."
Mira's warning echoed in her mind—S-rank missions were perilous. She wasn't ready to gamble with her life so early in her youth.
"Happy" presented the mission details. "It's called 'Save Our Island.'"
"Let's check it out together," Natsu persisted.
"An island?"
"The cursed Galuna Island."
Lucy recoiled at the mention of the curse. "Absolutely not!"
Ghost and curses were her greatest fear.
"I'll share half my fish with you," "Happy" bargained, his love for fish evident in his offer.
"Not interested!"
Seeing Lucy's resolve, Natsu relented. "Fine, let's go. I'll watch you from the second floor as I finish the mission."
"Let's go~!"
"Hey, hold it up high!"
Lucy sighed helplessly. It had been nearly a month since she had become a member of the Fairy Tail guild.
Without earning enough money, she wouldn't be able to pay her rent, so she made the decision to part ways with Natsu and focus on lucrative jobs.
"Let's take a break today."
Lucy turned to head back to her room when she noticed a piece of paper lying on the ground.
"What's this?!"
It was the S-rank mission request that Happy had secretly swiped.
"I didn't take this piece of paper, did I?! Does this mean I stole it?! What should I do?! I need to return this as soon as possible."
"Huh?"
Lucy picked up the quest and her eyes suddenly caught sight of a Zodiac key listed as a reward.
"Is this for real? A Zodiac key?!"
Lucy was a Celestial Spirit wizard, and such wizards required keys to summon their celestial spirits. The Zodiac keys were the most advanced type, incredibly rare with only twelve in existence.
Collecting any of the Zodiac keys was a daunting task. Now that she had stumbled upon one, she was determined not to let it slip away.
And the reward was 7 million Jewels. With the successful completion of this task, Lucy wouldn't have to worry about rent for quite some time.
"Natsu! Happy! Wait for me!!"
