章 39: Chapter 39: A New Marine’s Tale

With the pirates defeated, the tension in the air began to settle. The Marines moved quickly to secure the remaining pirates and tend to their wounded. Vulcan, standing tall with his naginata resting on his shoulder, watched as the men worked, still buzzing with the adrenaline from the battle. The fight had been fierce, but his tactical decisions had led to a swift victory, and the Marines around him were murmuring in awe of his skill.

The Rear Admiral approached him, clapping him on the shoulder. "You fight well, kid. And you think on your feet. Not many can handle a situation like that with such clear-headed tactics."

Vulcan smiled slightly, brushing off the compliment. "Just did what I had to."

The Rear Admiral's eyes narrowed as he studied Vulcan. "Still… You're different. It's obvious you've trained hard, but your tactics, your skills—they're not something you just pick up anywhere. You're from HQ, aren't you?"

Vulcan nodded, though a bit of pride welled up in him at the acknowledgment. "Yeah. I've been training under Vice Admiral Garp."

The Rear Admiral's eyes widened slightly, clearly impressed. "Garp, huh? That explains a lot. They say those trained by him are built different. I can see that's not just a rumor."

Vulcan chuckled. "He has his ways of pushing people, that's for sure."

The Rear Admiral waved for him to follow as they made their way back toward the Marine base. As they walked, the Rear Admiral glanced at Vulcan curiously. "But what brings you here? You've got the skill, clearly, and HQ Marines usually have a clear directive. What's a trainee like you doing out here on your own?"

Vulcan scratched the back of his head, his expression turning a bit sheepish. "It's kind of a long story."

"Well," the Rear Admiral said with a grin, "we've got time."

As they reached the base, Vulcan took a deep breath, trying to figure out where to start. He followed the Rear Admiral into his office, where the man gestured for him to sit. Vulcan, not usually one for formalities, decided to take the offer. The office was simple, clean, with a Marine insignia on the wall and a few maps spread across the desk.

"So," the Rear Admiral leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms, "let's hear it. What happened?"

Vulcan leaned back slightly, rubbing his neck as he spoke. "I was on an island… training. One of Garp's ideas to toughen me up. He dropped me off there and gave me this Rokushiki handbook, told me to survive and train until he came back to get me."

The Rear Admiral raised an eyebrow, listening intently.

"The thing is," Vulcan continued, "he never told me when he'd come back. So I trained. I fought off beasts, got stronger, and learned as much as I could on my own. Weeks passed. Months passed. Still no sign of him."

The Rear Admiral chuckled. "Sounds like Garp, alright. He tends to get sidetracked. Probably off somewhere chasing pirates or getting into trouble."

"Exactly," Vulcan said with a smirk. "So I just kept training. It was hard, but it pushed me further than I thought possible. I fought some wild beasts on the island, even made a weapon out of one of their bones. But one day, something changed."

The Rear Admiral leaned forward slightly. "Go on."

Vulcan's expression grew more serious as he continued. "One day, a pirate crew showed up. They landed on the island, probably thinking it was abandoned. I could tell right away they were trouble—strong, too. So I did what I could. I fought them off, took their ship, and… well, figured since I had a ship, I might as well set sail. Garp didn't tell me how long I was supposed to wait, so I decided to make the best of it."

The Rear Admiral let out a low whistle. "You took down a pirate crew by yourself?"

Vulcan shrugged. "It wasn't easy, but I managed."

"And that's how you ended up here?" the Rear Admiral asked, clearly impressed.

"Yeah," Vulcan replied. "After I set sail, I didn't really have a destination in mind. I just drifted for a while. The Grand Line is rough when you're alone, especially when you've never sailed before. I almost didn't make it. But after a few days at sea, I spotted this island and figured it was better than starving on a drifting ship."

The Rear Admiral was silent for a moment, letting the story sink in. Then he shook his head with a chuckle. "That's quite a tale, kid. You've got guts. Most people would've folded under those conditions, but you kept going. No wonder you held your own in that fight earlier."

Vulcan leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "I had no choice but to keep going. Garp told me something when he left me on that island. He said if I didn't push myself to the limit, I'd never be ready for what's to come. And he's right. The Grand Line isn't a place for the weak."

The Rear Admiral nodded, his expression thoughtful. "You've got the right mindset, that's for sure. And you've proven yourself more than capable. But now that you've made it off that island, what's next for you? You're a Marine trainee, so I assume you're heading back to HQ."

Vulcan paused for a moment, considering the question. He hadn't given much thought to what his next move should be. He had been so focused on surviving and getting stronger that he hadn't planned beyond that.

"I suppose I'll head back to Marineford," Vulcan said slowly. "I've done all I can on my own, but I'm not done growing. Garp's out there somewhere, probably dealing with something big, and I still have a lot to learn."

The Rear Admiral nodded, his eyes narrowing slightly in thought. "That's not a bad plan. Marineford is the best place to continue your training and find out what Garp's been up to. But if you're looking for more than just training, you might find yourself in the middle of something even bigger."

Vulcan raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean?"

The Rear Admiral waved his hand dismissively. "Nothing concrete, just rumors. Things are always shifting out here in the Grand Line. Big players moving, new threats emerging. You're bound to get caught up in something eventually, but with your strength and potential, I'm sure you'll handle whatever comes your way."

He leaned forward, extending a hand. "By the way, I didn't properly introduce myself earlier. I'm Rear Admiral Lyons. I've been stationed here for a while, keeping this part of the Grand Line secure. It's not the easiest job, but it's nothing compared to what you'll face once you're back at HQ."

Vulcan gripped Lyons' hand firmly, shaking it. "Nice to meet you, Rear Admiral Lyons. And thanks for the fight earlier. I learned a lot."

Lyons grinned. "You're welcome, kid. It's not every day I meet someone who can keep up with me in a fight, let alone outthink a group of pirates. You're going to make a fine Marine one day."

Vulcan stood up, stretching his muscles as he prepared to leave. "Thanks. I'll be heading out soon. Back to Marineford to figure out what my next steps are."

Lyons nodded, watching Vulcan closely. "Good luck, Vulcan. And if you ever find yourself in these waters again, you're always welcome here. I have a feeling we'll cross paths again."

Vulcan gave a nod of acknowledgment and made his way out of the office, the sun setting over the horizon as he walked toward the harbor. His ship waited for him, and though he still had no idea where Vice Admiral Garp was or when he would see him next, Vulcan felt a renewed sense of purpose.
