2.45% Husband Upgrade: Heiress's First Love / Chapter 5: A Moment

章 5: A Moment

Lexington led me to my room to rest and freshen up.

"It's not like I've forgotten where my room is," I rolled my eyes in annoyance right before stealing a glance at Alexander, who still followed us.

"No, you wouldn't, but I'm here as your chaperone," he said, giving me a wink.

"Shut up," I shouted, storming ahead of him.

I could hear his laughter as I pushed open the door to my room.

"Miss Lilith!" Rose greeted me in the sitting room of my suite. She had a smile on her lips showing a cute little dimple that always made me jealous.

"Rose, I'm so happy you're still here," I quickly rushed up and pulled her into a hug.

Rose wasn't just my maid, she was also my confidant, my best friend.

I knew it wasn't exactly a conventional friendship, but she had always been there for me even when it wasn't required of her.

She was one of the people I missed the most when I left the Durfort family. There were so many times that I wished I could give her a call or take a bus to see her, but part of the deal was that I was to cut off all communication with the people in my past life, including the staff.

At this point I was thankful for my Grandfather's conditions, if I had the Durfort family behind me or any of my friends, I doubt that I would have seen Jason for the monster he truly was.

"Well, this is a nice reunion," Lex said, leaning against the door frame.

Before I could even respond to his banter, however, he was pushed inside and the door closed firmly behind Alexander.

I looked up, remembering that Alexander was still there, he was still following us everywhere.

"I'd like a word with Alexander," I declared.

"You're not supposed to be alone—" my cousin began to say before I cut him off.

"We both know you aren't some conservative, Lex," I looked him in the eyes, showing just how annoyed at him I was right now. "Plus, we all know nothing scandalous is going to happen."

"Really?" Rose was clearly holding back a giggle before I turned my glare at her.

"Let's leave the love birds alone, Rose," Lex said, winking at me before pulling my maid out of the room, leaving me and Alexander alone for the first time since I saw him again.

I looked at him from head to toe, he was in a business suit, and clearly, he had met with my cousin on business matters. I couldn't help but be impressed by how handsome he looked in his suit, no wonder women and men all over were falling for him.

It didn't play to his detriment either that he was the youngest CEO in the country, it was for that fact that Jason applied to work in his company because he was so desperate to meet Alexander Harris.

If only he knew that all he had to do was treat me well for the next five years then he would have met his idol and learned that we were once engaged.

Fortunately for me, Jason knew nothing of the truth and I wanted to keep it that way.

"You have that look," he said in a deep voice as he took a step closer, uncrossing his arms and gently lifting my chin so that our eyes met.

"What look?" I felt my voice tremble as I tried to keep my composure.

"That intriguing look you have when the gears in your mind are turning," he said, leaning forward until I felt his breath against my ear.

I took a step back, but he took another one forward bringing us even closer than before.

Looking him in the eyes, I hardened my heart. My Grandfather might be right about staying with the people who knew me in the world I had grown up in, but he was wrong about me finding love with Alexander.

Years might have passed since we broke up, but he was still the same person.

People like Alexander didn't change, the world changed around them instead.

"You don't have to go with this engagement," I managed to say.

"No, I don't," he answered.

"So call it off," I insisted.

"No, I won't," I glared at Alexander.

I couldn't fathom why he would want to be tied to me, why he would want this arrangement.

Then the realization hit me.

"Finally getting tired of all the mothers and daughters throwing themselves at you?" I teased.

I knew just how many enterprising women would throw themselves at men like Alexander, men like my cousin, and yes, even men like my husband.

I knew I was right when he flinched and grimaced at my statement.

"Okay, so you need me to keep them away," he didn't deny it so I took it as the truth.

His eyes met mine for a moment, it was as if he was searching them for something before he pulled away.

"As my fiance, you should end your marriage with Jason Young as soon as possible," he told me. "I'll help you with the papers, all you need to do is sign."

I nodded, thankful that Alexander had offered to help.

Although I knew that my Grandfather would have helped me, it was nice not having to ask him for more help. I didn't know what other deal he would ask for, maybe even demand I give him Grandchildren in the next year to help me out.

It wasn't that I didn't want children, I wanted them with a man I loved.

At the thought of that man, I couldn't help but look at Alexander again, there was a time not so long ago that he had been that person, the one man I wanted a family with.

But the past had to stay where it belonged, behind us so that we could move on.

"I also expect you to spend time with me, both publicly and in private," this was something I expected.

"And when will we announce our engagement?" I asked, placing a hand on my hip.

"Tonight," I gasped, there were no divorce papers, and yet I was already engaged. "Your name will appear alongside mine everywhere. Don't even think of going back to that man."
