Alex's fist tightened, his resolve steeling against the mounting tension.
"Did you have someone tail Dunice?" he asked evenly, his voice belying the intensity of his suspicion.
"I can assure you, I have no knowledge of such actions," Douglas responded, maintaining his poker face.
Alex's gaze hardened. "You expect me to believe that?"
"So you don't believe me?" Douglas asked faking a pained expression.
Douglas's feigned hurt only fueled Alex's doubt.
"Alex raised an eyebrow skeptically. "You wanted her before, and now you expect me to believe you're not still after her, especially now that she's a better person?"
"I agree, I wanted her. But, as you said, it's all in the past." Douglas emphasized the word "past."
"I don't need her anymore," Douglas continued, his tone firm. "I can't oppress her. She's in a better place now, and she definitely won't give me a chance."
