Midterm Exams Preparations.

Midterm Exams for this trimester is three weeks away. If I scored a point less in any of the subjects, I could kiss my high school life goodbye and get expelled.

I was thinking of taking a break from club activities, but my performance had been really outstanding I heard from my seniors that I might get myself a spot on the regular lineup.

In the end I decide to sacrifice my time of sleep a couple of hours shorter. In that way I could double my studying time.

"Alright, let's get to start reviewing the materials."

...

May 1 came and went, and before we knew it, the school week was over.

I continued to listen attentively to the teacher and write down notes like a good student should. Well honestly I couldn't even understand half of what the teacher was saying, but I continued jotting down notes.

When lunch came, Hirata come up to speak.

"Chabashira-sensei mentioned that the midterm is coming up soon. Remember that if you fail, you'll be expelled. Therefore, I think it would be a good idea to form a study group."

"If you neglect your studies, you'll get a failing grade and be expelled on the spot. I want to avoid that. However, studying won't just prevent expulsion; it may also help earn points. If we receive high marks, our class's assessment should improve as a result. I asked some of the students who scored high on the test to help prepare a study plan. So, I would like people who are anxious to come join our group. Everyone is welcome, of course." Hirata looked over at Ike and the others who scored the lowest in our class.

"Starting today at five o'clock, we will plan to study in this classroom for two hours a day until the test. If you'd like to join us, please come whenever you like. Of course, I don't mind if you need to leave partway. That's all I have to say."

As for me, normally I would be glad to join them. But with how I intimidating I look, I would only be a distraction to them they wouldn't be able to focus on studying.

After Hirata finished several of the failing students stood up wanting to join the group study later.

...

I had my lunch in the cafeteria. The portions are a bit more than usual. I could say it's really delish well balanced meal for a growing boy like me.

I returned to the classroom after lunch. When I went back to my seat, an unexpected student came up to talk with me.

"Hey, Sakuragi. Do you have a minute?" It was none other than our main character, Ayanokouji.

"Do you need something?" I answered.

"What are you going to do about the midterm?" He asked.

Midterm, I already planned it out so I guess it's all right?

"Oh, that. I'm troubled, I mean failing means getting expelled right?" I said.

"Oh, yeah? Well, I have just the thing. I wanted to form a study group to meet every day after class, starting today. Want to join?" He asked.

Oh yeah. I remembered that there was an event like this right? It was Horikita who will come to teach us.

If that's the case then I think I'll have to take a break from club activities for a while. The possibility that I might not get into the regular lineup might decrease, but I know I can just perform well I'm every game I play. After all I'm a genius in basketball.

"Sure."

"Right, you won't huh... Wait you will?" He looked at me surprised.

"It's a study group right? Yeah, count me in."

He stared at me in awkward silence for a few seconds. It irked me so I complained.

"What are you looking at me like that?"

"Sorry, I just didn't expect you would agree immediately." He said.

"Well I'm sorry I didn't look like someone who would study. Well anyway, who's gonna be teaching, you?"

"No, not me. That would be Horikita."

"I see. Alright then."

And because of that I made plans to have group study now. Ayanokouji and I exchanged contact information for the plan of group studying.

...

The next day.

I contacted the team captain about my absence during club activities. I said that I wanted to focus on studying until Midterms. He agreed of course since it was an understandable excuse.

After a long day of class, it was finally time for the scheduled study group. I went to the school library where Horikita and Ayanokouji were already on a table.

"Hey, I've come." I greeted them.

"You came early, Sakuragi."

"Well yeah, It's rude to be late when you're already helping me out." I said.

I turned towards Horikita, in which she also looked at me.

"I heard that you will be the one tutoring me, Horikita. I know that I'm an idiot when it comes to studying, you have my thanks for inviting me in this study group. I'll be in your care." I gave a slight polite bow.

"I don't mind. But you need to be serious." Horikita said.

"Of course, that's my intention."

I sat down across Horikita. I had to make sure I'll get the frontrow seat for my tutor so she will give me more attention in teaching me.

"I've brought everyone!" Kushida came with three other students with her.

It was Ike, Yamauchi, and a guy named Okitani. They were escited since the most popular girl in class will also join in the study group. Horikita tried to protest, but Kushida found a way to convince her.

"Eh, why is Sakuragi here?" Ike jumped when he noticed me sitting.

"Does he even study?" Yamauchi followed.

I glared at them, "Do you have a problem with me?"

They quickly denied panicking.

"I included most of what will be covered on this test. We only have about two weeks left, but I plan to thoroughly walk through everything. If you don't understand please ask."

Horikita gave us a set of questions. It was one of my weakest subject, Mathematics. The problem goes like this:

A, B, and C collectively have 2,150 yen. A has 120 yen more than B does. Also, after C gives B two-fifths of his money, B would have 220 yen more than A. How much yen did A originally start with?

Let's see. I watched some lectures on YouTube and they gave me an idea to solve complicated looking problems.

I think the first thing to do was break down the problems into smaller simpler ones? Alright here we go...

A, B, and C are 2,150 yen in total, so I should write it as: A+B+C=2,150.

Next would be... A has 120 more than B, so it should be like this?: A=B+120.

This part really lost me. C gives two-fifths of his money to B, then B would have 220 yen more than A... How do I even write this?

"I'm lost." I unconsciously muttered.

"What do you not understand?" Horikita asked me. She must have heard me.

I only responded in silence as I was so embarrassed.

"Honestly, first- and second-year junior high school students could easily solve this problem. If you stumble here, it'll be impossible for you to continue." Horikita said.

"Like Horikita-san said, it'll be bad if you get tripped up here. The math problems on the short test were about this difficult, but the last problems were really tough. I didn't understand how to solve them," Okitani said.

"I'm sorry, I'll try a little harder."

I took a deep breath and concentrate more. It took me five or so minutes before I finally solved the problem.

"So A is 710 yen, right?"

"You finally answered it. And that was just the first problem." Horikita sighed.

"My bad. I'm not really good with Math."

"It's fine, you're the first out of the three of you that solved the problem." Horikita looked at the two people who also failed at the short quiz.

"Ngh... It's a little embarrassing that Sakuragi got it right before us." Ike said.

"I wasn't even getting serious, just look at me." Yamauchi said.
