章 2: Chapter 2 — First Hunt

Now ready, Konrad closed his eyes and concentrated on summoning a soldier.

110 source points were consumed and a tall, handsome, and strong German soldier dressed in a standard German military uniform appeared in from of him. The soldier had blue eyes, a stoic face and a determined look in his eyes. His blank rank slide showed his rank of Private and his back was perfectly straight as he stood at attention.

The soldier gave a crisp salute.

[Private Erwin Schreiber, reporting to duty sir!]

Konrad returned the salute and spoke in a commanding tone.

[Welcome private Erwin. I am Supreme General Konrad of the First Army of the Third Reich. Our number one priority is reconnaissance of this new world!]

Even Konrad was slightly surprised at how naturally he gave out the aura of an authentic and commanding general.

The soldier immediately replied.

[Yes sir!]

Konrad closed his eyes and thought of the simplest and most reliable gun of his world; the AK, also known as the Kalashnikov. He debated between the AK-103 and the AK-104. Konrad wanted the powerful 7.62x39mm round for guns. The 5.56 round might work against humans, but who knew what creatures were in this world? The only big difference between the AK-103 and AK-104 was that the AK-104 had a shorter barrel length, although he had seen some studies showing that the difference in barrel length was not enough to make any quantitative change to the range or power of the gun.

Ultimately, Konrad chose the AK-104 for its convenience and ease of use in a forest environment. Since he knew the components of the gun, the price was cheaper. Although it was larger than his handgun, it was less complex and compact, leading to the price being the same.

60 source points were consumed for two Ak-104s and 40 points for 180 rounds in 6 magazines. Like this, Konrad's stock of source points became completely empty.

Konrad muttered under his breath.

[Eh, I'll just kill some animals to get some more points for food and water. I'm in a forest after all]

Konrad split his guns and ammunition equally between him and Erwin. Loading his magazine of 30 full metal jacket 7.62x39mm rounds into his Kalashnikov, Konrad was full of confidence. He thought of a saying that he heard on Earth, "When humans held guns, they even dared to fight God!".

[Private Erwin, how well can you use this gun?]

Erwin, who was loading his gun, instantly responded.

[Sir, my abilities are to the standard of a veteran soldier in the modern military!]

[Good. Follow me to perform reconnaissance. Stay vigilant. From now on, we will communicate through hand signals]

[Yes sir!]

Although Konrad knew that it was safest to let his soldier lead, he still preferred to be in front and take the lead. Since he was now a general, how could he cowardly hide behind his soldiers? He must be the bravest and charge onwards towards danger! Of course, Konrad knew that wasn't what generals really did in real life. During modern wars, the generals would stay in the backlines and command the soldiers on the frontlines. In no circumstance would the generals be in any mortal danger, let alone lead a squad into enemy territory. However, this was a new world! Konrad was full of excitement and bravery and simply loved the feeling of holding a gun while exploring an alien, dangerous and new territory.

Konrad and Erwin held their guns in the Low Ready position as they quietly moved through the forest. They stayed alert and light on their feet, covering each other's blind spots.

Suddenly, Konrad noticed a herd of deer grazing in a clearing ahead and whispered to Erwin.

[Get ready, we'll kill all of the deer for source points. You start shooting from the left side of the herd and I'll start at the right side. Use full auto to maximise casualties. Amo is not a problem]

Erwin nodded silently and aimed down the iron sights on his gun.

[Fire on my mark. Three... two... one... Mark!]

A continuous thunderous sound emerged from the two guns. The guns roared and spat out deadly bullets at the oblivious herd. At a fire rate of 10 rounds per second from each gun, the deer fell like wheat being harvested. Bullets tore through their flesh only to emerge cleanly from the other side of their bodies leaving devastating wounds in the process.

The deer instantly panicked and ran in different directions. After finishing their magazines, Konrad and Erwin reloaded their guns and continued firing. The slaughter continued for only 15 seconds before what remained of the herd managed to enter the cover of the thick forest.

All the Kalashnikov ammunition had been consumed. In return, 20 deer were killed and 12 more lay seriously wounded. Konrad pulled out his pistol and went around to the surviving deer, shooting a single bullet into their heads to put them out of their misery. Due to having regularly gone hunting in the past, Konrad was not disturbed and felt nothing at the killing of animals or the bloody scene in front of him. Erwin followed closely behind and faithfully remained alert of the surroundings.

After killing the last deer, Konrad concentrated and was delighted to see that his number of source points was now 64.

[2 points per deer… That's pretty good]

With a thought, 60 points were exchanged for 360 rounds of ammunition, equalling 180 rounds, or 6 magazines each.

The four remaining points were exchanged for military rations. After splitting the ammunition and having a quick meal, Konrad and Erwin continued on, not willing to spend too long by the corpses in case something a bit more dangerous than a deer was attracted by the gunfire. After all, Konrad had no idea of what this alien world was like. Who knew what strange monsters or creatures existed here? Sure, his guns were powerful, but they had limited ammunition and fire rate. If they got surrounded by a large horde of monsters, they were screwed.
