I died.
I'm in a pristine waiting room, waiting for what I can only assume is my afterlife. The walls are clean white, and the ceiling is open to an endless sky. The chair I'm in is nothing special, just a regular office chair with a mahogany wooden desk in front of me. Behind the desk is an ambiguous person not quite masculine but not quite feminine.
"Hello. I am the god of rebirth, and you have been chosen for a once in an afterlife opportunity to live again with any three wishes you want. World selection and appearance are included in the rebirth process, so don't worry about wasting wishes on those things."
"So this means I died? I can't remember how it happened. Is that normal?" I ask them. I'm not upset I'm dead, I don't mind it actually, I think because I'm dead.
"It is not, in fact, normal. Your death was particularly gruesome, so for your convenience, we erased it from your mind. Do you have any further questions?" They ask.
"No, that's all of them," I say, and when I finish, they begin speaking again.
"Alright then on to business, you may take as long as you like while deciding what you want for your reincarnation. I'm told the decisions can be rather daunting at first." They say with a small, reassuring smile.
"Thank you, but I think I know what I want already. When you spend most of your life dreaming of better ones you kind of know how you want to live in a new world." I laughed sadly while saying this, imagining how most of my life was spent in the hospital under observation.
With an incline of their head and an accompanying smile that put me at ease, I began to speak, "There are so many worlds out there that I wish I could go to but the one that has stood out the most has to be the world of My Hero Academia. A world where being a superhero is a thing to be proud of, with no one calling you a menace day after day? All take that life over the life of someone like Spider-Man any day."
"Great choice, it's one of the more popular destinations for reincarnates so I'm quite familiar with the process and shouldn't have any troubles sending you there." I don't quite get what they mean by having trouble sending me there but it's probably just some bureaucratic god stuff that I don't need to worry about.
Continuing, I start detailing my appearance for my next life, "I would like to have pale white skin and be 170cm tall when I'm done growing. For my eye and hair color, I would like to have dark purple, almost black hair and violet eyes. The rest of my appearance can be decided by my genetics, which I hope are good." I looked pointedly at the god as I said this and raised my eyebrow.
Laughing slightly they said, "Yes I will ensure your genetics are top of the line, anything else regarding your appearance?"
"Hmm, no, I think that covers it. Now onto my wishes!" I said enthusiastically.
I've thought about these kinds of things for so long, the chance to go to another world and live a new life with powers and abilities that it's hard to think of everything that I would want. I have infinite possibilities here and I never thought that I would get this chance, the hospital bed always seemed like it would be my life forever. Thinking hard for a good five minutes I tell the god what I think would be the best power combo for my new life in a new world. I might even get to cosplay my favorite character too!
"For my first wish, I would like to have the powers of Raven from DC." Raven had always been my favorite character in the Teen Titans and I always felt a kinship towards her. She was stuck with the shadow of her father looming over her and I was stuck with my sickness looming over me, both always telling us we'd never be free. So when she fought back it felt like I could fight back too, that I could live without the shadow of my sickness.
The god of rebirth nodded their head at me to continue with my wishes after I told them my first one so I continued, "For my second wish I would like to have perfect human physiology so that I never get sick and I am always in tip-top shape."
Nodding their assent the god motioned for me to continue, "For my final wish I would like for no one to be able to take or copy my powers, mind, or soul. So that means no stealing quirks All For One, or Monoma borrowing my awesomeness."
The biggest problem that the world of MHA faces is All For One, or at least the main cast's biggest problem, so I want to be prepared so that he can never take away the one thing that is mine. My greatest fear would have to be that I'd be at the whims of the world again, with no way to fight back and no way to keep going. A big bad like All For One losing his biggest trump card against me won't stand a chance if we ever meet.
"Alright then it seems everything is in order now, but let's go over things one more time to make sure that everything is the way you want it to be, sound good?" The god of rebirth asks with an ever-patient smile on their face.
"Yes, that sounds great!" I say enthusiastically, nearly vibrating with excitement to be reborn in another world.
"So we have a rebirth into the world of My Hero Academia, a physical appearance of pale white skin, a height of 170cm, dark purple almost black hair, and violet eyes." They look at me with questioning eyes.
"Yes, that's all correct," I say anxiously, still excited for my new life.
"Perfect, then we have your wishes three. First the powers of one Rachel 'Raven' Roth, second we have perfect human physiology, and lastly, we have absolute safety of self meaning no one can steal or copy your power, mind, or soul except yourself. Does that cover everything?" With all my wishes stated they asked a simple question like someone reciting your order back to you at a restaurant but in this case, the question held my future in its hands.
"Yes, that covers everything that I've ever wanted." I nearly whisper out my answer, with my rebirth so close in hand I can think of almost nothing else.
"Wonderful, with everything in order I'll send you on your way. Please note that not all things will be as you remember, especially with the presence of a reincarnate, the universe tends to shift to accommodate the new being. Have a glorious new life!" Before I could ask what they meant by 'things won't be like I remember' the god snapped their fingers and I was bathed in darkness.
My new life was about to start and I was wholly unprepared for the future it held.
—------------------------------------------------------------------------
In a dark room lit only by candles a group of ten people stood around a pentagram and chanted in a dead language that no one present truly understood, only that it was said to summon the devil. Their goal was simple: summon the devil and ask him to grant them the power they've always wanted so that they could be accepted in a society ruled by quirks. So they continued their chanting, growing louder and louder and hoping against hope that this would work… until it did.
The sigil that rested beneath their feet, made of the blood of a baby goat, began to glow ominously red, which fueled their chanting and lit the spark of hope they held in their hearts. When their chanting reached a crescendo all the candles in the room went dark from a gust of wind that swirled around the room into a smoky form in the dead center of the glowing pentagram. The smoke swirled itself into the form of a tall man and continued to reside in the dead center of the pentagram without making a noise until he raised his hand and pointed out to the gathered group of robed cultists.
The man made of smoke with his hand pointing directly at a beautiful woman with dark hair spoke in a deep booming voice, "For the power you seek I require the hand of this woman as my bride."
The cultists all shuddered at his words and understood that this wasn't a question: if they wanted to be as powerful as the rest of the world then the woman beside them had to be sacrificed to this demon.
The beautiful woman with dark hair and pale skin however was ecstatic at the idea of marrying the devil himself and pushed forward to the edge of the circle. She spoke with a silky smooth voice that would have made anyone smile from just being near her, "I will be your bride, oh great Lord, just promise they will get the power they deserve."
The demon made of shadow said nothing for a few moments which made the robed figures fear that she had insulted him with her request. Just as they were about to pull the woman back and beg the smokey figure for forgiveness a loud cruel laugh echoed around the chamber, "Step into the circle and they will have the power they deserve and you will be the bearer of my greatest creation."
Looking behind her for a moment the woman looked at the faces of her friends who all had the same expression of longing and lust for power that she knew so well from the face in the mirror. "Goodbye everyone, I hope you all get the quirks you wanted," with that said she stepped into the circle with a smile. The last thing she saw before her vision was consumed by fire, was her friends writhing on the ground and screaming in pain as their limbs were stretched and their bodies morphed into horrid shapes.
