章 21: Ch-22: Power Play

<><><>

A small bird flew from the border of Wolfswood and flew directly towards the Great Keep, the innermost castle and stronghold of the castle complex the solar of Lord Eddard Stark was located. It landed on the windows of the solar where Ned Stark just brought the fat knight, ser Wylis to talk privately.

Inside the solar, Ned Stark received the letter from Ser Wylis and engaged in a brief conversation before reading its contents. The letter, a concise note from Lord Manderly, expressed his apologies for being unable to travel to Winterfell due to sudden illness. It also stated that his eldest son, Wylis, would stand in his place to complete the ceremony.

"He may be too fat to ride or suffering from some new stomach illness," Ned silently mused after perusing the letter.

"I don't believe an illness will take your father so easily, Ser Wylis. He is destined for a long life," Ned softly conveyed his thoughts to Ser Wylis.

"Aye. However, my father has entrusted me with an important matter to discuss with you privately," Ser Wylis spoke, wiping his bald head. Climbing to the solar had taken a great deal of effort from him, especially after the long ride.

"Please," Ned said, placing the letter in a drawer and adopting a serious tone. Private discussions between lords were never to be taken lightly.

"Lord Stark, as you are aware... Many lords perished in the recent war, leaving their lands unattended and their people to suffer. There is no order, and some are forced to sell their daughters and sons for a mere loaf of bread.

This not only deters traders from coming to the North but also compels us, the people of White Harbor, to take a stand. I come here with the hope that these lands can be placed under the jurisdiction of House Manderly."

Ser Wylis spoke with eloquence, yet Ned's brows furrowed, revealing a hint of displeasure on his face. The rebellion and its aftermath always weighed heavily on him and his house.

"Which specific lands are you seeking, Ser Wylis?" Ned cut to the chase.

"Ah... Thus far, my father believes that claiming the lands from the borders of Dreadfort to Sea Dragon Point would provide comprehensive protection for the entire North. It would safeguard us from southern bandits and shield traders from the Ironborn," Ser Wylis replied.

"Your house desires all the lands from borders of Dreadfort to Sea Dragon? Ser Wylis, if I were to grant this request, House Manderly would hold more land than any lord in Westeros. Such power could disrupt the unity of the North. I must consult with the other noble houses before making a decision."

"Yes... Yes, of course, Lord Stark. There is no rush. House Manderly has always been and will remain, loyal to Winterfell. This idea is one that we are compelled to consider, given the safety and prosperity of the North," Ser Wylis quickly replied, his expression reflecting guilt. Ned nodded in acknowledgement.

The private conversation between the two lords did not go unnoticed by Jorah, who had been skinchanging with a bird. The bird remained inside the solar for an extended period until Ned Stark exited the room.

Ned did not discuss the matter with anyone afterwards, leaving Jorah feeling restless and anxious. Cutting off his connection with the bird, Jorah's eyes returned to their normal state.

"These fat bastards... Is this their limit, or will they extend their influence further? Dreadfort... No, they cannot attack Dreadfort without a valid reason, and Lord Bolton is not a fool to give them one.

Furthermore, digesting these lands would take more than two generations of Manderlys," Jorah pondered, rubbing his head as he contemplated the sudden disaster that had befallen him and his future plans.

Meanwhile, Jorah stepped out of the guesthouse and "accidentally" ran into Ser Wylis. The two men approached each other as if they were prepared to draw their swords. The guards stationed nearby were on high alert, ready to intervene should this unexpected encounter turn into a conflict.

"You look more like a lord now!" Wylis exclaimed.

"And you look fatter... no... you are fatter," Jorah retorted.

They both burst into laughter, embracing each other, much to the relief of the guards. Fortunately, these lords were friends. Fortunately.

"Aye! You have grown taller since we last met. How are things on Bear Island?" Ser Wylis asked, leading Jorah to his room before pouring them each a cup of cheap northern drink.

"Things have never been better. I am married now, and my wife is expecting. Trade has commenced, and progress is being made, considering our history," Jorah summarized the latest news in a few words, surprising Ser Wylis.

"You got married? When? Who is the lucky girl?"

"Lady Annara from the Crownlands. She comes from a minor house not worth mentioning," Jorah avoided divulging his wife's family name, recognizing its potential value and the significance it would hold in the long run.

"From the Crownlands? She must be quite beautiful."

"Aye! She certainly is. I believe I saw your wife as well," J

orah remarked before taking a sip of his drink.

"Ah! Leona from House Woolfield. They have always been loyal to us, and this marriage will only strengthen our bond," Ser Wylis explained.

"Hmm... So, you're here for the oath ceremony?"

"Aye. The journey from White Harbor to Winterfell was quite long. But how did you arrive so late?"

"I never received word that Lord Stark had returned. You know, ravens don't visit Bear Island too often."

"Hmm... Aye. That can happen. But it is good that you are here. I have some matters to discuss. I believe Lord Stark will speak with you soon regarding them. We believe the North is too sparsely populated after the recent war, and bandits run rampant. Trade has declined, and chaos looms.

Before taking any action against them, we must secure the borders and address the matter of the lords responsible for these vacant lands. We cannot afford to offend others or defy the King's rule."

"Hmm... It makes sense. Do not worry. Bear Island stands in support of any action taken against these bandits. I have well-trained men who need honing."

"Wonderful."

As the two men tested each other's mettle and conversed, the doors swung open, and Lady Leona entered accompanied by maids and guards.

"Ahh! You must be Lady Leona. Ser Wylis is truly blessed. Wylis, we will continue our chat after dinner," Jorah said.

"Of course."

Jorah left the corpulent knight with the enchanting woman, cursing Wylis' good fortune. Without the wealth and strength of House Manderly, how could a pig marry a swan?
