The way he asked the question caught me off guard. What exactly was I? How the hell was I supposed to be aware of that? 

For the entirety of my life, I was under the impression that I was a member of a distinct species of humans, specifically one that possessed exceptional skills. But it wasn't until very recently that I was made aware of some very peculiar truths, which are things I had been totally ignorant of up until this point.

It was inappropriate for him to direct that inquiry in my direction because I was not the intended recipient.

The fact that I wasn't human was obvious to me, and I had a decent idea of what I might be, but he didn't need to know that. Nobody among them needed to know that. I would benefit more from them continuing to treat me like worthless.
