(Check the auxiliary chapter before this one. Info on the story is there. Enjoy.)
The last thing Jack remembered was looking up at the sky with his fellow soldiers, watching a bomb drop from a North Korean plane. There was little they could do, no one expected it. He remembered the feeling of being engulfed in flames and shrapnel tearing into his body. He felt so powerless in that moment, unable to save himself because some world leader woke up pissed off. He expected to simply cease existing, yet here he is laying on a bed. He simply laid there trying to listen for any clues to where he is, not wanting to risk opening his eyes. Soon enough he heard a voice in his mind.
[System connection complete.]
[Welcome host to the Pawn System. You are currently in the Pawn Shop provided by the system. You are to provide your pawn services throughout a multitude of world. The system will give you the observe skill to aid you, however we will rarely provide aid after this. Earn currency then exchange it for Pawn Tokens, the systems currency, to upgrade and expand your shop. PT can also be used to buy basic skills for the host to learn, anything other then basic skills will require the host to learn on their own.]
[QUEST: Tour your shop.]
[REWARD: Starter Gift.]
Jack was confused, however if this system thing is what gave him a second chance at life then he would listen for now. Opening his eyes and sitting up Jack looked around, he's in a small room that can barely fit the single bed and nightstand. Standing he went to the rooms door, pulling it open he stepped out into the main shop floor. There are glass cases making a U allowing customers to walk around in the center and observe any products in the cases while also allowing him to keep himself separated from the customers. There are also shelves on the walls, allowing him to store and take down items, but the glass cases prevent customers from reaching over and grabbing products. It was a simple layout but it would definitely work. He saw another door, walking in showed it is a bathroom, with a sink, toilet and shower. So there is a bedroom, bathroom and shop, it's simple but he could work with it.
[QUEST COMPLETE. REWARD ADDED TO INVENTORY.]
[THINK INVENTORY HOST]
Jack did as told and saw 30 square slots, in the first is a gift. Thinking remove caused the gift to appear in his hands, opening it he found four items. He recalled the system saying something about an Observe skill, so he thought observe while looking at the items.
[GOLD BAR: 24 karat, 12.5 Kilo gold bar.] [WORTH: 850,000 PT]
[1850 Foot Officer Sword.] [WORTH: 300 PT]
[White Gold and Diamond Ring: 2 carats of diamonds in a 14K white gold band] [WORTH: 7,000 PT]
[Gold Woman's Bracelet: A bracelet of 18K yellow gold.] [WORTH: 4,600 PT]
The gold bar is definitely worth the most, his biggest concern is how the currency exchange works. If he's going to different worlds then different currencies would be an issue.
[It is not an issue host. Pawn Tokens are valued at 1 USD from your original world. Simply put your price in PT and it changes to the equivalent currency of whatever world you are currently on. It will always take the most popular currency of that world unless a customer asks to pay in a different manner. Remember you are a pawn shop, you do trades and loans as well.]
Well that would make things much more simple. Taking the items, he put the gold bar and jewelry in the glass cases, the sword he put up on a shelf. He didn't have much but it's a start, he really couldn't complain. Life is life.
Now he just needs to figure out how to get to a world, his shop currently didn't have a front door. He figured he wasn't on a world yet, considering there aren't any windows he can't look outside.
[The system will choose the hosts first world. Eventually the host can unlock the ability to choose the worlds he travels to. After connecting with the host and scanning your memories, emotions and goals the system has decided to place a barrier on each world. The host must gain a certain amount of influence on the world before the barrier will be lifted and the host can move on. Once the barrier is lifted the host may come and go from that world. Choosing first world. Good luck host.]
Jack expected something to happen but a door just appeared at the front of the shop. He also noticed a banner high up on the wall that said: Jack's Pawn, underneath that it said: We trade, sell, loan and buy. That straight up told customers what to expect in the shop. Jack is assuming that it is translated to the local language.
[Yes host. Just as you are able to read, write and speak in the major languages of every world you visit.]
Nodding Jack walked out the door. He saw a medieval looking street, with carriages riding up and down and people walking off to the side. Looking up he saw a sign hanging from his stone shop wall, it said the same thing as the banner. No one seemed surprised to see his shop, so he probably just took over an abandoned building and the system added the sign. Walking back in Jack sat on his stool behind the counter, he then noticed a cabinet underneath this glass case. Opening he saw pawn slips, seller, buyer and trade receipts. They were all pretty straight forward, as long as the customer could read they would understand.
The door suddenly opened with the bell ringing. His first customer, perfect.
I’ve been thinking about this idea for a few days, it’s prevented me from continuing my other story. So I finally decided to just start writing it. This first chap was pretty short but let me know what you think.
