章 4: Valeria's Villa
Once combat ended the defeated hyenas particlized, leaving only a small cluster of items.

With slight disappointment Valeria looked over the drops, "As expected from common monsters, there isn't anything of real value. Since you've been cooped up in Eleutiro's Illustrious shit hole I doubt anyone has explained life beyond Adanano. Monsters of countless varieties wonder the countryside, every nook and cranny you stumble on has some unfriendly occupant ready to tear you apart. That doesn't even include bandits, brigands or barbarians, no shortage of unsavory types in the wilds. While each town has conscripted legionnaires, they primarily focus on town affairs, occasionally some wealthy aristocrat will call upon them to deal with threats to trade routes. Villages have been known to pool their resources to hire a Legion when faced with a particularly nasty beast. Typically, the wilds are contested by adventurers, traveling merchants and nomadic treasure hunters. Safety in the field is far from guaranteed, yet with risk comes reward, fortunes can be made if one has enough guile to take advantage of opportunities. Take yourself for example, Eleutiro is personally paying for you to receive my tutelage and has even paid a premium for your beast companion, had you been some senators son Id not bat an eye but a slave? That's what I call opportunity, if you succeed, you wont be the first slave to win their way to freedom. I digress, defeating monsters will reward you with drops, common, bronze, silver, gold, epic and legendary. Don't get your hopes up for the next hyena to bring you a golden ticket, the quality of drops directly correlates with the standard of the beast. Besides defeating mobs you'll occasionally encounter treasure chests, usually in high monster density areas or in a brigand camp, these also vary in rarity and contain all sorts of useful items. Just talking about the possibility makes me want to rush off and bash some baddies right now!" Clinching her fists she jabbed the air a joyful smile pressed on her face. Raeja seemed to agree, responding with a low grumble he shook his mane and picked up his pace.
The trio had covered quite a bit of ground since defeating the hyenas, the countryside provided a maze of well worn paths over grassy knolls. Reaching the crest of a particularly large hill Cas stopped abruptly, below the rocky path opened into a wide valley, in the distance a modest villa stood.
"Finally Home, lets hurry up" Taking off, the women gave her companions no time to debate, her long legs quickly setting the pace. Roaring Raeja refused to be outdone, bolting for the villa his coat shining in the sunlight. Destined for last place Cas laughed before breaking into a steady jog.
Winded, his stamina near depletion, Cas arrived, his companions gracious enough to leave the oaken gate cracked, passing by a colonnade he entered a courtyard. What greeted him was astonishing. Raeja lay preening beneath an olive tree but around them all manner of beasts meandered, a troop of chimps scooted around an orange tree, chewing fallen fruit whole. A skulk of foxes sheltered in their den near an outer wall, occasionally the vixen would corral her pups as they tried to venture out. Strange knee high rat creatures looked almost like mutated rabbits, their floppy ears twitched at the cacophony filling the courtyard. Nothing compared to the sight of a giant gray ape glistening with crystals of ice, the ape eyed the lion contemptuously.

"Valeria's constant companion since youth, this great ape has been endowed with the power of Ice and is immune to water based damage."
"If I didn't have Gruxe id have never parted with Raeja, be thankful tamers can only have one primary beast in their retinue." Clasping a crystal chalice Valeria leaned against the courtyard wall. "I've been thinking, there is no better way to learn then to face difficulties, come I want to show you something." They entered an atrium and stepped into a room with walls lined with leather bound books and dazzling tapestries. "This one."

"Deep within Mount Blackrock, Dark mage Lavis corrupted a phoenix, its power growing out of control the mage was forced to seal the beast within the volcano, travel to the mages former lair and retrieve the crystal that seals the beast."

"Take it." Valeria encouraged
"I cant imagine quality items such as this simply fall from the sky, how am I to accept such an exorbitant gift?" Cas fought the urge to hastily except, etiquette seemed prudent yet the quality of the quest conveyed difficulty.
"It's not a gift, Eleutiro paid for your training, I acquired this piece in anticipation of your arrival. Now, take it, we must begin preparations immediately. Journeying to Blackrock isn't a causal stroll through Adanano" Turning, Valeria left Cas with his thoughts.
Finely crafted furniture filled the room, Cas could only assume this was the beast master's study. Taking a seat at a walnut desk he thumbed through literature left out. "Since I've been here this worlds occupants don't seem designed to understand this is a game, its as if the creators made a world where the characters truly live the experience." Thinking back, as an adult Cas spent his leisure time in dive bars when he wasn't buried in work. In his youth, he wasted many afternoons lost in epic worlds collecting ingredients and slaying beasts, assuming this was designed in the same light, the difficulty of the quest must be catered to the beginning of his adventure. Considering he had Valeria guiding him there wasn't much chance for something to go wrong. Cas was nervous about failure as he hadn't met anyone except NPC's. What happened when a player characters HP reached zero? He had an uneasy feeling that he didn't want to find out... He also couldn't see away to deny the quest, what else would he do? There was no where to go, no logging off for him. Dark thoughts crept in the confines of his mind, pushing them aside he looked at the tapestry and accepted the task.

Exiting the room, Cas Navigated the lavish villa, green gold birds fluttered through the air chirping a song of their species. Dazzling wisps of light sparked behind them leaving trails of residual mana. Reaching up to touch the lights he received a notification
Flash of Fantasia +3 to Mana capacity
Knowing nothing that added to his statistics could be a bad thing he ran his had through each trail he saw adding thirty three total points to his mana capacity. Perched atop the atrium the birds tweeted joyfully.

"How fortuitous, spellsong birds only travel this way once a year during their annual migration. Take it as a sign your quest will be bountiful, did you mange to increase your mana?" Valeria sipped honeywine from her chalice
"I did, currently I have a 35 point capacity." An amount seeming paltry compared to her apes stat.
"Hmm, not quite enough to learn any castable but enough to endow your weapons with a bit of magical damage. Ill show you." Retrieving a small scroll from her study she handed it to Cas.
Basic Earth Endowment- Casting adds 20 rock damage to any weapon, lasts 15 seconds, costs 30 mana (Cooldown 2 minutes)

Adding two to strength and dexterity he chose to place his last point in luck and closed the menu. Feeling his body grow limber was a feeling Cas didn't think he'd grow tired of anytime soon.
Spinning Valeria declared "Time for a meal Casimiro, tomorrow we set out."
