"Dad, I'm telling you, I can do this. You have to stop planning for failure." My heart was beating so fast, but as much out of excitement as fear.

It had taken my father a month to let me out of the estate house again after that injury. I was going stir-crazy. But he was finally saying that I could ride again—he claimed he had guards patrolling the estate in every direction, every day. And I reminded him I needed to get my body used to the activity again because we were leaving for Arinel in a week.

Holy shit.

I got excited every time I thought about it. But my father was insisting on having these strategy meetings every night. Even Ash wasn't allowed into the room for these. But Dad kept assuming David wouldn't pick me as part of the Select. I needed him to shift on that so there'd be no suspicion when I stayed.

He was, of course, being patronizing.
