Abigail fluttered and hummed and seemed almost giddy.

There was no way she could know what was happening, but she acted like she understood. She definitely knew something was up—I'd never called for her before time to get ready for whatever was happening that day, let alone at dawn, flushed and rumpled and shamefaced as I asked for a bath and for her to wash my hair.

That alone would have piqued her suspicions about David and I.

Of course, she thought we'd been involved physically for weeks now. But when she showed up with a battery of servants who placed the massive copper tub in front of the fire and began ordering them around with a near-giddy trill in her voice…

Well, if she didn't guess it was a wedding, she definitely knew something important was happening.

Then I realized, she probably thought David had told me he'd name me Chosen. She probably thought I was preparing ahead because I knew what was coming.
