Amiyah and I have been training for two hours now but my mind is elsewhere. She's had me continue activating each seal on its own—which I'm getting better at. Next, is using them both. But before we start that lesson, she told me to take a break. I think she can tell-
"You've been sulking all day," Amiyah says as we sit under the tree's shade. "Your training is coming along nicely though."
"I've decided I'm going back."
She silently nods her head and then looks up at the sky. "I figured as much."
I join her, staring at the pink clouds as they slowly pass us by. I really am going to miss this place. But, I don't plan on leaving forever. I just need to help Elijah, he holds so much in and drowns it out with drinks. I just need to know he'll be okay. Deep down the same goes for Brianna as well. I still feel like this is all my fault somehow, and I have to fix it.
"How do I stop her?"
"With her body? And her knowledge? I'm not sure, to be honest. I wanted to stop her while I had her but, what's done is done. Maria seems to believe in some prophecy that Helen won't succeed."
"I can't put my trust in that. I'd rather do what I can, while I can. The Valentine army will put up a fight but it doesn't seem like it'll be enough. I need help. And I refuse to believe you'll just turn the other way."
She sighs, and I feel instant regret—thinking I keep pushing the situation on her. I don't mean to. She lays back on the grass and folds her hands behind her head. "I care too much about my people to send them into war, Alyssa. If it comes to us, that's a different story. But actively pushing them into it? They've been through enough."
"I understand but sometimes risks need to be taken."
"You're starting to sound like your family, love."
"Look. Just help me figure out a way to stop her."
She stays silent for about thirty seconds, just staring at the clouds. I patiently wait for her answer but, growing impatient, I remind myself that it's not her battle. She's right to protect her people. I lay my head on the grass and stare at the clouds with her. After a few moments, she finally speaks: "You may already have it. The grimoire. If you have her spells, maybe we can figure something out, I'll help this way."
This grimoire! Why didn't I think of it?! I shoot up from the grass and hug her. She groans, telling me to go retrieve the book and meet her back at Maria's. I do as she says, running to David's house, excited that she's going to help. If this is all I can ask for, then I'll be grateful for it. She's already done enough for me, training me, and lifting my spirits.
I barge through the door to David's house and grab the book, also Elijah to tag along with me. I explain that we can find a way to stop her, and then we can take our plan back to Brianna. He's skeptical, which I understand. He doesn't believe Brianna will be so open about this but I see no other option. We run over to Maria's in a hurry and I knock on the door—completely out of breath at this point.
"That was fast." Amiyah opens the door to greet us.
"No time to waste." I place the book on her chest. We walk in and say hello to Maria. She gives Elijah a compliment on his looks and swoons over him. When she notices the book, her demeanor changes though.
"You should burn that thing. It'll do you no good."
"The book you're okay burning, but stopping Helen herself is too much?" Amiyah asks.
"Helen will not suc-"
"Yeah, she won't succeed. We've heard it."
"Yes, the book on the other hand, dear: it will bring nothing but harm if it falls into the wrong hands."
Amiyah rolls her eyes and begins flipping through the pages. Pages are filled from top to bottom with her handwriting and doodles. It looks similar to my own writing.
"What are we looking for exactly?" Elijah asks.
"Well, no one can fight Helen with a seal. She knows too many spells to counter and she's studied all the seal combinations she can. I believe the only way to win is to use her own magic against her. If I can just-"
"Why can't we just kill her? Outnumber her?" Elijah asks.
"She's immortal," Amiyah says. She continues flipping page after page, but it doesn't seem she's finding anything useful. She tells Elijah and me to wait around while she goes over it. Maria bakes us some cookies to which Elijah asks if she has any drinks. She reminds him that it's 11 A.M. but he doesn't seem to care. Luckily she doesn't have any. After an hour and thirty, he falls asleep and Amiyah may have finally found something.
"Sealing magic! We can try and contain her somehow. Sealing her within a magic object such as a totem, or I don't know…a bottle?"
"That could work but once she notices what you're doing, she can reverse the spell on you," Maria says.
Amiyah slams the book on the table. "I have no idea then. The only spell in this book that she wouldn't see coming is-"
"It's the conscience merging thing, right?" I ask.
The room goes quiet for a moment before Amiyah speaks: "Yeah, it's the soul transfer spell. But, who exactly would perform the spell? Give up their life and walk around in an immortal body that isn't there's?"
I stand from the sofa and sit across from her at the dining table.
"No, I refuse, Alyssa. I think we all would refuse you doing such a thing." She takes a pencil and throws it over at Elijah who's knocked out, and asleep.
"Hey! Your sister wants to do something stupid. Be a brother to her and tell her it's stupid."
"What's that, now?" He groans.
"I'm going to take over Helen's body."
He snaps out of his daze and walks over to the table. "Hell no."
"You all saying no, but at the end of the day. I still see no other option. I'm stopping her, and until someone comes up with something else…"
Everyone remains quiet. "Okay then," I continue. "Is the spell in this book? I'll study it, I'll train, I'll do whatever I can."
"It is," Amiyah sighs, flipping to its page.
"That's chaos magic, dear," Maria says. "We don't practice that here."
"You're saying there's no one to help?"
"There's one person," Amiyah turns to Maria.
Maria chuckles to herself. "Oh? Right, there is. He's so secluded, I forget he's still alive. If you can get his help, then go for it."
