"Haley, sweetheart, please calm down." Mr. Mitchell was soothing his daughter with his words, but he still hadn't gotten the courage to touch her. "I am sorry. I am so very sorry." She wasn't crying as much now though, and she was looking him in the eyes.
"Why? Why should I calm down?" She finally asked him, her eyes narrowed at him in defiance. I knew that she had a stubborn streak, and this was just making it that much more evident. I also knew that she was sensitive, which is why this whole situation was getting to her.
Then again, I hadn't helped at all. In fact, it was my fault that she had started to sob in the first place. Dammit! Why did I have to say all of that in front of her? I should have taken her father to another room and had a private talk with him. I should have taken steps to shield her from hearing my plans. I was just hurting her even more.
