章 6: What first Prince

"Ker why aren't you shifting." Katherine realized that it wasn't that she couldn't shift but her wolf wasn't shifting. "We were so busy with other things that we didn't even bother to check this body's physique. She's so weak that just one shift would break her." Ker replied after scrutinizing the body.

Werewolves start training as soon as they can walk, this is because their bodies have to be strong enough to withstand the shift.

Shifting into wolf form requires the bones to break and reshape. So if the shifter is weak, the bones remain broken when they shift back to human form.

"It will take forever to train this body enough to withstand the shift." Disappointment was evident in Ker's voice, she was so excited to finally be let out, only to find out that she can't.

"Don't worry too much Ker, we can still start training." "Aren't you being too optimistic, Katherine? This body is already eighteen" Ker said in a disheartened tone. "We'll make it work, this world has magic doesn't it? I'm sure there should be a magic tool to enhance training. For now you'll just have to endure it. Let's go back, the sun is starting to rise."

She wore her dress back on then went back to the Mansion.

"Oh my, dear sister! Did you sneak out last night? Rose dramatically exclaimed, making sure everyone within earshot heard her. "Did you go meet with your lover, I hope that doesn't get out in the news paper." She had a news paper in her hand.

'Did she wake up this early just to be the first to read the daily news paper?' Katherine wondered.

"I can't wait to show this to mother and father." She shrieked.

Katherine got the paper from her, she honestly couldn't be bothered by what Rose was planning, just wanted to know what got her all excited.

The front page of the paper had a glaring "BREAKING NEWS: Engagement between the first daughter of the marquis and the crown prince called off. Lady Katherine caught with lover in the library."

Katherine nearly lost her composure at the sight of a picture of her in the library and the man she met yesterday.

The picture was taken when she went to ask him if he was okay. Some how the person who took the picture managed to make that scene look romantic.

"What the hell, they have cameras in this world?" Katherine almost laughed at what her wolf said. "Is that really what surprises you, aren't you surprised to see me in this picture with a man we just met being called lovers? Besides, weren't you paying attention yesterday when I read about this world? They use magic stones called magic snaps that the media use to take these photos."

The man in the picture wasn't very visible so you couldn't really tell who he was, Katherine on the other hand was perfectly captured, you could tell from just one look that who ever took the picture took it with the intention of using it in this very article.

"I don't even know this man's name. Funny how the media seem to believe he's my lover." Katherine kept her calm demeanor. She didn't really care whether or not they believed her. It was not like she needed her family's trust.

She closed the news paper and gave it back to Rose. "Do with it what ever you please, I don't have time for this" she said and went to her room.

Rose stared at her back as she walked to her room, wondering what changed about Katherine. Did her near-death experience change her personality?

All the excitement she felt at the thought of showing the paper to her diminished. What was the point of showing it to her parents if Katherine herself didn't even look bothered.

"What did I waste all that money for if she was going to react like this. And that journalist charge a hefty amount of money!" Rose cursed.

**************

Back in her room, Lilly helped Katherine prepare for the day.

"What will we do for the day today m'lady?" Lilly asked as she did Katherine's hair. "There's nothing much to do, if Rose has already shown that paper to my father then it's only a matter of time before I'm called to his study." Lilly couldn't understand how her lady could stay calm in such a situation.

In the past, Katherine would fret over the smallest issues, but now that she's being accused of having a lover she's calm? How was that even possible?

( Knock, knock )

"Lady Katherine, the master requires your presence in his study." A voice said from the other side of the door.

"Well that was fast." Lilly had just finished tying her hair. So she stood and directly went to her father's study.

*******

Katherine arrived at the study and knocked, "come in!" Her father's voice boomed from the other side of the door and she went in.

The last time she was she didn't really get a chance to look at the place but now that she could have a good look, the place was beautiful.

In the marquis' study, a luxurious Persian rug adorned the polished hardwood floors, muffling footsteps and adding an extra layer of opulence.

The focal point of the office was a grand antique oak desk, commanding attention with its impressive size and intricate craftsmanship. The desk was meticulously organized, adorned with a variety of brass and silver inkwells, an assortment of quills, and leather-bound journals that hint at the Marquis's literary pursuits. Behind the desk, a tall shelf lined the wall, displaying a collection of books that spans various genres and languages.

The walls of the office were paneled in dark, richly stained wood, adorned with oil paintings and framed portraits of illustrious ancestors. The paintings depict scenes of grandeur, representing the Marquis's noble lineage and serving as a reminder of his privileged position within society. Elaborate drapes made of fine silk in deep hues of burgundy and gold frame the large windows, exuding a sense of regality while also providing privacy and discretion.

A comfortable high-backed leather armchair is positioned behind the desk, accompanied by a matching set of armchairs and a polished mahogany coffee table, creating a cozy seating area. This serves as a space for the Marquis to receive visitors or engage in private discussions, with an air of exclusivity and elegance that reflects his status.

Illuminating the room are a series of brass chandeliers, casting a warm and inviting glow. The soft lighting complements the natural light flowing in through the windows, creating a harmonious ambiance that is both productive and relaxing.

In one corner of the office, a small reading nook is set up, complete with a plush velvet armchair, a floor-to-ceiling bookshelf, and a brass reading lamp. This quiet oasis allows the Marquis to escape into literature and find inspiration, surrounded by the wealth of knowledge and imagination that his collection holds.

When she was done looking around, she went and took a seat without even been told to sit. This shocked the marquis, Katherine had never sat down in his presence without his permission.

What changed?

"Ahem..." He cleared his throat when he noticed that Katherine's attention wasn't with him.

This grabbed her attention. When she finally looked at him, she was shocked to see an edict on his table instead of the news paper she was sure to find.

'Oh, right, the king was yet to send the edict that says I'm to marry the first prince.'

( Sigh )

"Was that the first prince you were with in the library?" The marquis voice sounded almost embarrassed. He was embarrassed to have reacted the way he did last night without knowing the full story.

"What?" Katherine was confused, "What first prince?"
