“Why couldn’t he control your Alpha?” I ask.

“Usurper’s Amulets steal the Alpha’s power to control the pack, and Alphas can’t use their Voices on themselves.”

My mind is racing. “How do you know it works that way? Doesn’t the Alpha have to die to make one of those amulets? When could one of them have been tested on one?”

“The title of Alpha is hereditary. We know the amulets don’t work on the Alpha’s heirs. If Enoli Storm had a living descendant, like, for instance, an infant son, the title of Alpha would pass to him. If he escaped Springwater, he would continue to be the Alpha, even now, and Crowin’s amulet wouldn’t work on him.”

My mind flashes back to my mother telling me about how the evil that waits in Springwater killed my father.

“Did he have an infant son?” I ask.

“Yes,” Nick says.

“Why the h*ll haven’t you mentioned that until now?”
