章 11: Chapter 11: Rotation is the key

Today we'll be practising our bowling and it will go on for the next five days. I will try my best to introduce variations in my bowling. I was alone inside the nets trying to find ways to slow down my bowling speed but everything was in vain.

"Hey, Vipin. Come here. Let's discuss what to do with you." A little later the coach called me in. I went to the place where the coach was instructing others and he also pulled out himself from the crowd and called me to another pitch.

"So, you found anything by yourselves?" The coach questions as he picks up a few balls from the bowling bucket.

"Nothing as of yet. I tried everything to vary my bowling speed but the batsman can anticipate it everytime. I don't know what to do anymore." I answered as I really was out of loop for what to do.

"Really? Everything. Did you try changing your grip?" The coach said as he smiled. The smile inflating he has heard this question multiple times and the only thing a new player does not try is changing his grip.

'Heck, I didn't even think of changing my grip. I don't even know much about grips. Changing them is out of the question for me.' I thought as I meekly smiled back and scratched the back of my head.

"Don't worry. You aren't the only one who didn't try this. Come on, let me teach you a few grips. Then you can practise on your own." The coach replied back as he passed me a ball.

"Let's start with your speed first, then we'll move on to movement and then you can find the perfect pitching line and length on your own. That just comes from experience." The coach said as he came near me with a ball in his hand.

"There are two types of bowlers, Spinners and Pacers. Both have their pros and cons but spinners have longer careers than a pacer so many choose to go with spin but again bowling is an art of surprising the batsman so in the end it's just a way of throwing the ball. Don't let anyone decide for you."

"If you really love the sport and have what it takes. No one will be able to take your place. So now decide what you wanna go with. Spin or Pace. I have seen both and they look good to me. You can go with both but again rather than dividing why not just focus on a single thing to the pin point accuracy. This is what I believe." The coach gave me a talk before teaching me the real stuff.

He is right in his way. I obviously chose pace. I am confident that I won't go down that easily and then the coach finally taught me what I wanted. Not everything but enough for today.

He told me about the effect of grip on the speed of the ball. Neither do I have to slow down my running speed nor the action but grip. He told me about the basic three grips, the split finger, back of the hand and the knuckleball.

"Would these three be enough?" I asked as only three variations for bowling doesn't seem a lot.

"What do you mean? You only have to bowl six bowls in a row. These three grips with other grips for movement and then your line and length. There are so many combinations you can throw a whole day without repeating yourself." The coach replied with another quick answer.

He went back and left me on my own. I would love to if he were to watch but it's a good thing he went away. I can solely concentrate on this now. With the ball bucket ready with around thirty balls. I was ready.

First ball a simple fast bowl. Second, back of hand. I could feel the difference in speed. Third, a knuckleball. Fourth, with split fingers.

With each variation I could feel the ball getting slower and as I threw them again and again. I found what affects a ball speed. Rotation, rotation of the ball after it is released from the hand makes the difference.

All the different grips I tried today one way or another just reduced the rotation of the ball. What if somehow just stopped the ball from rotating, just like floaters serve in volleyball.

I won't be trying right now. First I have to make these different grips a part of my style. They still feel a little foreign and my hold on the ball is not as perfect as I have when I just throw it at maximum.

So for the rest of the day I went again and again among the different grips and tried to absorb as much as I could.

It is time to go back. The training is over for today. I got out of the academy and saw Virat on his bicycle.

"Were you waiting for me? Did you miss me that much?" I asked as I was surprised but his actions.

"It's nothing like that. I promised to practise with you so I had to come" He replied as he tried to hide his embarrassment.

"Fine. Let's go. I never thought you'd miss me that much. My sweet Chiku." I replied as I peddled down at full speed.

"I'll beat the shit out of you. If you said that again. I said I came to help you practise." Kohli replied angrily as he chased me down the street.

"If you can catch me before we reach the ground. I won't call you Chiku ever." I said I peddled faster than before.

"Don't challenge me you shit" Kohli retorted while chasing me but nothing changed. He never got close to me the whole time.

On the ground he was ready to play my balls and I was also ready to freak him out with my new weapons. It will be fun.
