Selene had finished getting ready in silence and followed Sparrow down to the kitchen. Could she have been telling the truth? Onyx would have told her if he was already betrothed to another, right? So many questions race around in her head. Emotionally, Selene doesn’t think she can handle one more thing. She hasn’t been able to stop and think about her own situation for what feels like forever. She’s grateful that Sparrow doesn’t hang around after leading her to the kitchen.
Her relief doesn’t last for long as she walks into the room to find an older heavyset woman hovering over a hot stove. Her long gray hair is braided and hangs down to the middle of her back. A blue dress hugs her round figure and is protected by a warn brown apron.
She turns to Selene and smiles. “Hello, there.”
“Hi,” Selene manages to smile back.
“My name’s Cora, and I run this kitchen. What can I get for you today?”
“It’s nice to meet you, I’m Selene.”
