章 5: A Crash

Idris Rosario.

"I will give you one last chance. Don't make me do this." Storm said and I could see the lighting dancing in her eyes. "You will not win."

Did I want to fight her? She's not really giving me a choice. Go with her or fight her to leave. If it were Jean or Scott I would be fine with it. But Ororo had been my mentor figure. Providing me with advice, for the week I was here. Trying to teach me meditation to control my mind.

We had discovered that my powers were directly connected to my emotions. If I were too angry the hotter and more uncontrolled the flames became. As I was thinking the ground underneath me had already turned black and embers were starting to form at stray pieces of grass. I was breathing heavily, and my heart was pounding in my head. This was too much.

I growled and shot my arms forward. I would win. Beams of fire, shot forward. It was more of a wave then a solid beam. Storm just spread her arms and raised a current of wind to bat away the flames.

"Your powers are strong, but you lack focus." She said, her face was firm. Then she raised her arms in the sky to bring lightning to them. Shit. I flew around her and as I was close she shot the lighting around her like a shockwave.

It connected with me and I shot backwards, leaving a burn trail on the ground as I slid across it. The fire went out for a second and I screamed. Flashes of being tortured at the facility went through my head. I was smoking, heavily. Storm pushed her arms forward raising a fog to cover her.

I couldn't see anything in front of me and I grunted as I stood up. I rolled my shoulders and flew high in the air looking down into the fog. I could see lighting though out it. I flew around trying to find Storm and I couldn't see her anywhere. That when I heard a thunderclap and looked behind me to see a lightning bolt crash right into my stomach. I landed back on the ground and my powers fully deactivated, and I just stared at the sky. I could see a figure hovering softly towards me. It was Storm and her face was sad.

"Let this be a lesson. Power can only take you so far." I looked at her, my body was still in shock and couldn't move it. I chuckled and she only looked confused. My skin was actively bubbling. It felt terrible. The bubbling only released smoke and my skin was starting to pool around me.

My hand was the first to turn, then it followed up my arm. Lava. This was far different. Then just the flame mode. I had a dripping lava arm. I only stared at it, and Ororo looked down at it as well. I raised it and looked at Ororo who met my eyes. Before she could say anything, I grabbed her ankle and threw her into a tree. The cry of pain hurt my ears. I only continued to stare at my hands. I knew metal was impressive to melt as the melting point was around 2,200-2,500°F. But that was just my aura and the most focused blasts to reach that temperature. Feeling in my body came back and I struggled to my feet. My lava arm was still dripping and solidifying to the floor. This would make my base temp around 2,200°F. At least in my arm.

I looked back at Storm and saw her knocked out against the tree. I felt bad, I saw the burn mark on her ankle. It was feint, because of her natural resistance to high temperatures. But 2,200°F is 2,200°F so there's not much to do about that. I looked at my arm and turned into fire again. My arm reverted back into fire; I could feel the drop in temperature. Cool.

I had to get out of here before she woke up, or Wheels shows up with Boy Scout and Red. I took to the air leaving a trial of smoke behind me. I could see the jet in the distance flying to where Storm and I fought. I only kept going leaving it to collect Storm. They'd rather save her then capture me.

I flew for awhile, trying to create as much distance between them and me. I don't know where I stopped but I needed to find a pair of normal clothes quick. I landed in a park. When I say land I mean crashed into the ground multiple times before skidding to a stop. I was tired, and just laid there. It was the longest I had used my powers and all I could do was just stare at the sky form my little crater.

"Are you a superhero?" I heard a voice; I saw a kid poke his head from above the crater. I groaned.

"Does it look like I'm a superhero?" He just stared at my costume with wide eyes.

"Yes!" He looked ecstatic. Poor kid.

"Hate to burst your bubble. But being a hero doesn't really work out with me." His demeanor didn't falter for a second.

"But you came from the sky, and you have a super suit!" Fair points, I guess.

"Yeah, I'm not a superhero. Where are we anyway?" He just jumped down into the crater.

"Augusta." Augusta? Augusta?

"Augusta, Maine?" He nodded and lifted my arms watching it fall to the floor with a frown.

"Great." He just looked disappointed with me.

"For a superhero you don't look like much. Where your cape?" I just gritted my teeth.

"I'm not a superhero. Capes only get in the way." He crossed his arms.

"All the good superheroes have capes." I Finally regained feeling in my body and crawled up to my knees with a groan.

"Like who?" I was struggling to my feet and poked my head out of the hole.

"Superman." Who the hell was Superman.

"Doesn't exist, name a real one." He frowned and tried to climb out of the hole. I sighed and lifted him up. He kicked me in the chin on his final pull up. I hissed sharply.

"Sure, he does. He's the best." He struck a pose with his fists touch his waists in a very powerful pose. His head was held high, and he had a wide smile. Looking into the distance.

"Yeah, where'd you hear of superman from?" I lifted myself out of the hole. He pulled a comic book out of his pocket and showed it to me. A man with a blue suit and a red cape was on the front of it, he had a wide smile and looked like he wore his underwear over his suit.

"A comic book? Superman is from a comic book?" He just nodded vigorously before shoving it back into his pocket.

"Mom's gonna flip when I bring you over." Wow, wow, wow.

"I'm sorry what?" He didn't stop for a moment just grabbed my hand and pulled me with him.

"Yeah, you totally have to meet my mom. She always says heroes aren't real. But you're here to prove her wrong." I stopped walking with him, and he just frowned when I didn't budge.

"Look kid. I got to get out of here, me being with you alone raises enough questions. Not including the supersuit."

"You can't! You gotta at least say hi. She's just over here." He tried to drag me to where he was pointing and I could see a women on the phone and she looked frustrated.

"Fine. Just saying hi. Then I'm leaving, got to find a change of clothes to cover the suit." He just shook his head.

"You can borrow some of my dad's clothes. He's overseas right now, so he won't need them." He finished the last part with a sad look. Poor kid.

"I appreciate the offer but let's just talk to your mom first." He nodded and we got closer to his mom and she noticed me and reached into her purse seeing me with her son.

"I'll give you one warning, get away from my son or I'll mace you." I gulped and raised my hands.

"Wait mom! He's a hero!" She only stood up and pulled the boy behind her.

"Kid's right in a way. I didn't mean no harm." She snorted and walked backwards. The boy stopped her.

"Wait. He is." He looked at me with a curious look. "Show her". She looked curious too. I just sighed and backed away. They both looked confused, but I ignited, and their looks were quickly replaced with excitement for the kid and fear for the mom.

"Look, I'm not gonna hurt the kid or you. He said I could borrow some clothes, then I'll be out of your hair." I deactivated and she still looked fearful, she looked down at her son seeing him nodding, and pulling on her arm with a wide smile. She looked at me sighing.

"Clothes, and your gone." I nodded. "My husband will never believe me." She said the final part in a whisper. "What's your name?"

"Idris Rosario" I stuck my hand forward and the kid grabbed it shaking it enthusiastically.

"I'm Ben! And her name's Maria. My dad's name is John, my uncles are Kevin, Hector…".

"That's enough Ben. I'm sure he doesn't need to know our whole family tree." Maria cut him off with a sharp voice to silence him. He just looked at her, nodding. Before running back to her and grabbing her hand.

"Come on! A superhero needs our help, mom!" I sighed and rubbed my face.

"I'm not a superhero…"
