Amidst Nathan's condition and his lingering thoughts, Nigel had just come to realize that they were completely stranded. As it was now, they had no house to stay in, no relative to call for help, and absolutely no place to go. They were basically homeless now, and even though Nathan might not have realized it, reality will hit him soon enough.
He didn't bother the still shivering boy who hadn't said any other words since after his question. He had calmed down considerably when compared to when they arrived, and it was big progress. Things like this sometimes scarred people mentally for life, but it seemed Nathan would be fine soon enough. He rather focused on how they would live the instant they left this desert. They could leave town, start a new life elsewhere, but he had no money to fund such fantasies. Things weren't looking well for them at all.
