Something was wrong.
I was not sure of what, but gut instinct was telling me that I should be on alert. And believed or not, even the weather was whacked.
The kids were awoken by the loud sounds of thunder. They both cuddled against me as we listened to the thunderstorm that was happening outside. Even Fall was in the room, on the bed near the door.
I could hear him growl. It was so soft that the kids did not pick out the sound. However, I did. As my kids were looking at the flashes of lightning that were happening outside, me and Fall were looking at the door, waiting for whomever that was making the greyhound growl in warning.
Fall stopped at the same moment the thunderstorm ended. The dog looked at me as if he was telling me something. I pat his head to reassure him that I was okay. There were a lot of things Duncan was not telling me, but he made sure that I understand why Fall should be with us.
["He can sense others like me nearby," Duncan told me. "Immortal beings actually feared him. No matter what pantheon they belong to, Fall can and will kill them." I looked at the killer dog Duncan was referring to. At that time, he looked so docile playing with Nicole. I would never peg him to be a killer.
"Okay," was my only reply.]
The threat must have passed because Fall got off the bed and went back to his usual place near the kids' door. My kids, however, were a different matter. They were sleeping on my bed and I was not in the habit of waking them up.
I slowly slid down to make sure I can get out. Both were sleeping beside me so, I have to be careful not to move either one of them. I breathed a sigh of relief when my bottom touched the rug I made inside my room.
I glanced back at my kids. Both were hugging the pillows that were on my bed. I cannot blame them, buying a California bed was the right decision I made. I would love to kiss them, but they might wake up. I quietly made my way to the kitchen so I would be able to cook breakfast.
I heard Fall's footsteps and I smiled, he need time to go out. So when I opened the back door, he made a dash into the bushes to do his thing. I shook my head and held the door open for him so he doesn't need to scratch the door.
There was a cold bite in the wind and the sky looked dark. There was a sudden coldness in me that made me think that someone had just walked over my grave. Goosebumps broke into my skin as a gust swirled around.
Instead of being afraid, I tilted my head and looked up. My eyes narrowed as I observed the movement of the clouds. A smirk slowly spread on my face as the movements lessen like they were being controlled somehow.
"I am not sure who you are," I said, looking at the early morning sky, "but try not to piss me off. I have a lot of things I have to do, and I do not give a fuck if you are a god or an immortal being. I am done. If you have something to say, tell me. Face me. I am not the kind of person who would cower behind a man. Not like beings like you, who attack and hides behind the veneer of your power."
I know I was taunting whoever this immortal being was. I do not give a fuck, nor a damn. Enough was enough.
Fall gave a loud bark before going back inside the house. He too looked at the sky and gave a warning growl. I placed one of my hands on top of his head to stop him from attacking. He must have known who the immortal being that was currently bothering us because he sat beside me and waited.
"You know him, boy?" I asked, never taking my eyes off the now brightening sky. What I got was a soft whine and a lick of my hand. "You are welcome. As long as you act human, and behave." I gave a two-finger salute before I went back inside. Leaving whoever it was thinking about the invitation I have issued.
The next couple of hours were peaceful. Other than the kids waking up, Jane looked after them again. Duncan was actually just in London and would be back in a day or two. He wanted to take the kids with him, but he decided against it too.
["Those kids are my life," Duncan began, "And London is not a good city to visit, especially during these seasons. There are lots of body snatchers nowadays. And that's why I am going to meet up with the businessmen of London. Two young immortals were taken. It was a good thing that they were no' the arrogant sunofbitches that usually cause strife in the world. They manage to play along and messed up their memories." There was a deadly grin on his face that was supposed to scare people. Not me though, it made me want to climb him like a monkey more.
I did not do that and nodded to him in agreement. After all, what could I say? I have only read about them in books. Interacting with them was a whole different ball game.]
I went back to planning the menu for the next week for the set of guests that were scheduled to arrive. These were vegans and as much as I like meat, there were times that I crave having vegan food too.
Darwin was calling the vegan community on Strathpeffer. He was asking around to see if anyone could help him plan and cook which meal would be suitable.
The rest of the staff was out, looking for things these people might need. This was going to be a big group and they all need to make sure all their needs were met. From food to the toiletries that they would be using, it would be better to make sure that all were vegan-friendly.
So when the door of The Belle open, when I and Darwin was not expecting any, it caught us by surprise. I heard him gasp when he saw the young man standing at the main entrance of The Belle.
Why?
He was exactly looked like Duncan.
