Instead of resisting, or feigning ignorance to my words, Dax slumped to sit beside me on the floor.
For a long time, we sat gathering our wits, our strength to continue onward.
"How?"
"You think I won't recognize my own husband?" My eyes glanced sideways to take note of the emotional turmoil plainly spread across his face.
"I'm no longer qualified for you to call me that Luna," all emotion drained from his face, and those previously warm sapphires turned to ice.
"Why did you get rid of Alexis?" I asked, my heartbeat betraying my calm facade. Damian had been blamed for Alexis' death, but seeing Enzo inside of Dax now...
My unwillingness to confront my past was truly taking its toll on my sanity. It had been staring me in the face ever since I'd regained my original memories. Only seeing his reaction to Lex tonight had I allowed myself to finally recognize the doubts lurking deep inside.
Looks like you cannot teach an old dog new tricks, no matter how hard you try my dear Luna.
An emotional start and a fiery end to this chapter. I'm interested in what my lovely reader's opinions are on Enzo. Please share :D
Little tidbit on Luna's current psyche:
She's guilt-ridden about her current 'role' in this world, deflecting all her inner turmoil and hatred onto the alien races behind the scenes.
She knows the second she accepts accountability for her actions going forward she will crumble. So subconsciously she will always push the blame.
To her, playing her role means blocking everything out and she gleefully accepts that. So long as she acts out Sora, the ruler of the Greecian Kingdom and Queen of the Eastern Empire, then she is no longer Luna. She no longer feels Luna's pain.
The trauma she's endured is inhuman and not something a mere mortal could endure. Back to that song I shared in the previous chapter, she is just tired, hanging on by a thread.
In her relationship with Enzo, she is willing but sees his resistance. So she is scared to push further. Scared she will lose him completely and he will reset himself like Ren.
She understands the Ren she knows is dead, just like how when she woke in Zhiyue with no memories, all that she had been, all that she was, was gone. Now Ren is gone too even if s/he is right beside her.
She's lonely and scared and feels a suffocating weight on her in the name of Lex. I'll divulge more about their history as we go forward. None of it is pleasant. Sorry readers :(
