Katheran trotted down from her throne and snatched from the guards a letter sealed with red wax. I saw her reading the letter carefully, and her sharp eyes seemed to see through every word of the letter.

"Madeleine has raised her arms against us," Katheran said loudly to King Nick on the throne as she held the letter. "The rebels are made up of Madeleine's guards and the Kaelin family's army!"

"Madeleine?" King Nick repeated scornfully. "A woman like her challenging me? She's out of her mind!"
