Malia and I are quiet for a moment as we stare at the city before us. She exhales a sigh and I glance at her beside me, noticing the slump on her shoulders. She's been tense since I saw her earlier today. I wish I can do better as her brother. 

As if she's read my mind, she says, "You think we'll ever find her?"

My jaw clenches tight. She's talking about Jennifer, her mother.

Jennifer "Jenny" Rose used to work at the mansion when I was young. My father impregnated her on one of his drunken nights which led to Malia's birth nine months later. The mother and daughter stayed with us at the mansion for a few years until Jenny decided she's had enough of my father's maltreatment. She fled and took Malia with her.
