Before the family decided to go out and see the new changes, Karl decided to teach them the basics on how to use the gun in their hands.
Even though he heard from Jannah that usually in those novels she reads that guns don't really work on those so called 'monsters', he thought it's still good to learn a thing or two about guns in case that they need it.
It took them 10 minutes to get the basics right, credited to their high intelligence and Karl's great instructions. After doing all of that, they immediately decided to prepare to go outside.
Their first destination? To their aunt's place.
They decided to bring only little stuff that will be helpful to their little trip like first aids, snacks and water since their only goal right now is to fetch their aunt and possibly go explore the city.
Before they headed outside of the house, Sophie tried calling her cousin, which is the aunt of the siblings.
"..." After a few second, the phone on Sophie's hand said, "The number cannot be reached. Please try again later."
Sophie frowned and a thought struck her as she said out loud, "This mana might be more troublesome than I thought."
The siblings turned their towards her as Jannah said, "Ehh what do you mean mom?"
Sophie explained, "The mana in the atmosphere is disturbing the electromagnetic waves in the air. That's probably why I couldn't reach your aunt."
Lucy, Karl and Jannah all had a sudden thought as Karl frowned while Lucy and Jannah looked worried. Lucy said to her mom, "Mom, doesn't that mean..."
Sophie nodded solemnly, "Yes. All communications are down right now, probably even the Internet. This mana really is a great change. If we don't fix this issue ASAP, then it would be a lot harder for us."
Karl asked her, "Mom, how much time do you think it will take you to fix this issue?"
Lucy and Jannah also looked at Sophie. In the three's mind, they didn't even think of asking if she could do it, only how long. Because for them, Sophie can solve any problem in terms of knowledge and technology given enough time.
Sophie thought hard and said, "Probably two to three days if I'm in the lab. That's why we will go there immediately after fetching your aunt."
All of them nodded and Lucy asked one last question, "Mom, do you think the car will work?"
Sophie smiled, "Fortunately it will. It looks like mana only affected the waves in the atmosphere, not the electricity itself."
They all sighed in relief at her words. At least things didn't seem too bad for them.
After that the family headed out out of the house, each of them carrying backpacking of things they will need. Of course, the girls have the light backpacks while Karl has the heavy one. They didn't bring that much food with them since Sophie said there are more than enough in the lab, considering the fact that a lot of the people there stay there for days straight, so naturally the lab has it's food and other necessities already in there.
Before they pass the front door, Karl took a peek first at the surroundings. Seeing that nothing is amiss except for the continuous sounds of animals and humans, he motioned for the three to follow him quietly.
Sophie, Lucy and Jannah gulped nervously and slowly followed Karl outside the house and then to their car parked outside the house.
Hearing the sounds of people screaming, the girls were worried and Lucy couldn't help but pull Karl's clothes a little and asked hesitantly, "Karl, shouldn't we..."
Despite not saying anything, Sophie and Jannah also had the same thought of trying to help out some of their neighbours. Even though they weren't really that familiar with them, the girl's consciousness wouldn't just let them do nothing but watch.
Karl said while opening the car door, "I know what you guys are thinking. No we can't, we don't have time for them. Dozens of minutes have already passed and we don't know what's happening to auntie. We need to hurry to her and find her."
The girls got quiet when they heard Karl's words. Even though they knew that, they still couldn't help but feel awful, especially Lucy who has a soft spot for helping people.
Karl looked at them and smiled, "Don't worry, we won't leave them without helping just a little bit. Even I would feel bad if I just leave like that."
Lucy asked confused, "What exactly are you planning."
He smiled as he pointed at a car in the distance, "Throw something to that car over there and trigger the car alarm. Hopefully, it will distract those monsters that you guys are talking about."
Jannah doubtfully said, "Will that work?"
Karl just shrugged his shoulders, "Hopefully. I mean that's all we can really do right now anyways."
After saying that, Karl looked seriously at the three, "Though considering the amount of time that has passed already, I'm afraid some people have already left the world, especially those who were unprepared."
Sophie, Lucy and Jannah trembled slightly when they heard it.
Karl sighed, "And many more will do so in the future. That's why I'm saying it right now, I will only focus on your safety but I wouldn't turn a blind eye to those I can help. As for you guys, you can do anything you want and I won't try to change your mind. But..."
His eyes suddenly turned more serious than ever, "If I see that what are you doing is dangerous... then I'll be the first person to stop you, even if you end up hating me for it."
Hearing those words, the three girls lowered their heads.
Karl couldn't help but sigh at their reaction. He knew he is sounding like a hypocrite right now, but for him, nothing will ever replace the position of his family in his heart. He is and always will prioritise them over everything else and that included himself.
Though even if that is the case, some part of him felt sad and helpless when he thought of his own beloved family hating him due to his actions.
Still, Karl would never go back on his words. Since he already said it, then he will do it.
He walked up to them and held their hands and said in a gentle tone, "I'm sorry if I'm like this. I just don't want anything bad to happen to you all and of course to auntie as well. Your the only people I truly love and care in this world, so I hope you can forgive me."
Karl felt their body tremble for a moment. He became confused due to their reactions, wondering what are they really feeling since till now, they haven't raised their heads with their long hair covering their face so he couldn't read their expression.
Before he could ask them, the girls handed out the small bags they were carrying to Karl and said with their heads still hanging down.
Sophie in her normal voice, "Sweetie, can you put this bag there? I forgot something in the house. I'll get it real quick ok?"
Lucy followed in a low voice, "Karl take mine as well. I also forgot something in the house."
Then Jannah in a higher than normal voice, "Me too big bro. I'll be right back."
Without even waiting for his reply, the three rushed back inside the house, leaving Karl confused and worried with their bags in his hands.
He sighed and put the bags inside the bar.
***
Unbeknownst to Karl, a scene completely different from what he expected is happening in the house.
Sophie, Lucy and Jannah faces were a completely colored in red, their hearts beating so fast in their chest that they thought it was gonna come out, and all of them have a huge grin on their faces.
All had their own different thoughts swirling in their heads.
Sophie, 'My sweetie loves me... hehehe. I'm so happy.'
Lucy, 'Karl is worried for me because he loves me. Kyaaaa I don't know what to think anymore.'
Jannah, 'Hehehe big bro loves me and is willing to go that far just for me. I wonder if...'
Lost in their own thoughts, each one of them didn't even notice the other two presence as all they could think of is Karl's words repeating inside their mind.
I plan to have this story to have a bit of science to it as you can tell. But in no way am I knowledgeable in science. I might research some stuff, who knows but let me remind you this is still fantasy. If you see some weird and illogical things, just leave it up to magic and of course plot armor :)
Thanks for reading as always and have a good day everyone.
