章 42: First stage: Denial

[ Luke pov ]

"You are finally up." said Luke with a smile, placing the book he was reading down and focusing his attention on Christina, who had opened her eyes and moved a little. "Annabeth is going to be sad that you woke up just when she fell asleep."

Christina moved her eyes towards his lap, where Annabeth was resting her head with her eyes closed. A small smile formed on her face as she noticed both of them had been waiting for her to get up by her side, however her mind remained numb. Everything was slightly grey and the lack of light didn't help her see anything past Luke.

"W-Where are w-we?" asked Christina in a hoarse voice.

"Right now we are in the infirmary." replied Luke.

"Infirmary?" a confused expression appeared on her face.

"Yes, we made it to the camp and you have been under treatment." said Luke while looking at the floor.

"No..." she mutter in a low tone. "No, no, no..."

"Is anything wrong?" asked Luke in a concerned voice. Christina's expression turned into a pained one and if there was something wrong he would need to call one of the children of Apollo who were in charge of her treatment.

"Christina? Are you okey?" continued Luke, placing Annabeth's head in the chair and standing up to get closer to her.

"W-Where is she?" said Christina, focusing her empty eyes on Luke. "Where is she!"

Luke had been doing his best to keep moving forward. Getting to know other people, finding out what the next steps for Christina would be now that she had no arms, making sure the camp itself was indeed safe for them, it had been a rough past week filled with nothing but menial tasks that kept his mind off Thalia's death.

He looked away with a sad expression. "I am sorry Chris... but Thalia is gone." As he was saying that, he felt his heart light on fire, the weight on his shoulders that had been crushing him for the past week increased, threatening to knock him down. He already knew he might have to break the news to Christina, but there was something about this that made his mind want to shut down, he wanted to tell Christina everything was fine and Thalia was right here... but he couldn't. Thalia knew he would feel that way, yes... she made him promise and he indeed made the promise, now he would take care of them.

Hugging Christina, a small tear made its way down through his cheek. "I promised Thalia I would take care of you." he said, his voice was nothing more than a whisper. "It will be hard to keep going, but we need to, other wise Thalia would be sad."

"W-What.... no, no, no, no, no!" said Christina, her tone getting louder and the hoarse tone deepening. "Thalia! Where are you!" continued screaming Christina, however her throat, which was still hurt, stopped her from raising her voice higher as she began coughing out of control.

"She is gone Chris." said Luke, tightening his hug.

[ Christina pov ]

Fire, blood, monsters, screams, laughter, exhaustion, fatigue... death. It all came rushing back in an instant as my eyes widened.

My mind didn't quite process Luke's words nor his hug and instead remained focused on the endless stream of memories, each one more painful than the other.

"< He is lying Chris, I am right here. >" said a voice from behind Luke.

My instincts went into overdrive as I recognised the voice. Looking behind Luke, I saw Thalia with the usual smug smile she would have whenever she did something awesome. I tried to speak to her, however no words came out of my pained throat, instead they were replaced by more agonising coughs.

"Don't try to speak, Chris." said Luke while caressing my hair. "I'm here so its fine, you don't need to worry about everything okey? We will be fine... we will get through this as well."

I tried to signal him to look behind, Thalia was right there after all! However no words came out of my throat and with no arms I couldn't get out of his embrace, with no arms...

"Arghhhhh!" I screamed as I noticed my lack of arms. The pain was nothing compared to the shock, the inability to do anything but watch the emptiness where my limbs used to be at. I felt my heart beat faster as sweat began to fall down through my neck, empty screams that came out as nothing more than hoarse sounds filled the room.

Luke must have noticed my panic and held me tighter. "Its okey, its okey Chris. We are safe, we will get you new arms okey? everything will be fine so please don't panic." he kept repeating over and over again while caressing my hair.

My panic didn't diminish, I felt everything get darker and the walls smaller as the air became harder and harder to breath. The pounding on my chest increased until it became painful and the sweat that flowed through my back turned cold. What remained of my arms began trembling visibly, however it was nothing compared to the feeling in my neck, all my instincts wanted me of everything, more clearly than during dreams but differently from monster attacks. My throat kept getting tighter and tighter as the pain in my chest grew.

The walls kept getting smaller and the lights kept disappearing until everything turned dark. I felt my consciousness leave me as everything turned truly black, making my mind numb.
