章 17: Follow the owl 1/2

Author note:

Well, triple chapter today because otherwise it would not be the two parts of the 'Follow the owl', which would disturb me greatly (no I don't have ocd, but it would just look bad)

"And... done." said the doctor as the finished covering my shoulder with bandages. "Now it's time to see that leg."

Around half an hour later, which was made out of detailed explanations about each and every wound in my body as well as how to treat them, it was finally over. While to most this would be extremely valuable knowledge, having information about dealing with wounds is a key to survival especially when you get wounds on a daily basis, to us it was more of an... insult. Resting, buying pills, coming to do regular check ups, all he said were things out of our reach.

"Your turn now, Annabeth." said the doctor, reminding us once again of our mistake when saying our names. He was bound to tell the police once we left, which might bring more trouble to us than we would like. As Annabeth went to the stretcher, I grabbed the knife, he may have been kind so far but trusting a complete stranger who you are treating is... stupid.

Annabeth's check up lasted less than mine, the doctor mostly used bandaids on her unhealed cuts and cream on her bruises.

Once we were done, around an hour had passed. "Now give us your money." I say, my eyes gaining a serious appearance.

"Well here you go kid." he said while taking out his wallet and giving me the cash. "But you really should get help, you understand that don't you?"

"There is no help. Not for us at least." I say in a slightly gloomy tone, more sad than I intended. "Hey, uhmm this might be weird since we just threatened you and robbed you but... what's your name?" I asked a bit awkward.

"Rick, though you can call me uncle Rick." replied the doctor with a smile.

"I see... I won't call you uncle because it's creepy." I said with a serious expression. "But thank you."

As we made our way out, I couldn't help but be glad at how great things went. We got around 70 dollars from the doctor's wallet and a good check up, as well as lessons on how to properly add bandages and disinfect wounds. I knew he must be calling the police by now, but I couldn't help but be thankful to Annabeth for forcing me to come.

Exiting the hospital and heading back to the bus station since we decided to skip town as soon as possible and avoid possible police encounters. After a small walk, we watched the first bus we came across and got in, not even checking where it was going.

While on the bus, I felt my eyelids grow heavy as my head started slightly rocking back and forth. Eventually, the tiredness got the better of me and I felt my consciousness vanish as I rested my head on Annabeth's shoulder.

[ Annabeth pov ]

It had been a while since they got in the bus, long enough for them to have entered a new city. Having already left the small city they used to be in made her glad, she understood that if the police were to find them, they would most likely be separated. According to Annabeth the police was very different from monsters, with truly endless numbers and actual weapons fighting them would be quite impossible, especially since they were 'together', unlike monsters who lived either alone or in small packs. Luckily for them, if the police were to indeed find them they could use the fact that they wouldn't try to kill them to escape, running away from someone who would avoid using force on you is much easier than running from someone whose force without hesitation.

Looking at Christina who was currently resting on her shoulder, Annabeth was glad to have her, she was her hero after all. No matter what happen, as long as Christina was there everything would be fine. When they were hungry Christina stole for them, when they were bored Christina invented games or stole books, when they were cold Christina got blankets and guided them somewhere to sleep. Right now she couldn't imagine a life without Christina, and she didn't want to.

The problem with heroes is that they die. Heroes suffer and endure for the sake of others. Annabeth remembered the stories her father used to tell her, stories about heroes who saved the day and lived happily ever after... and stories about heroes who didn't. Her father used to tell her stories about the greeks, most likely due to her mother's identity, but greek heroes suffered, and after suffering they died.

Tracing the scar on Christina's cheek with her fingers she couldn't help but feel anger at herself. Right up until Christina got injured saving her, neither one had many serious wounds or even scars, not being able to use her arm well meant dealing with monsters was much harder and much more dangerous as well.

"I am sorry..." she said in a low voice while putting her hand away and looking out the window. February was already ending and that meant they would suffer no more at the hands of the cold weather. Rain's would no longer threaten to kill them through hypothermia and cold winds would no longer force them to seek refuge.

From the corner of her eye, Annabeth saw an owl resting on a tree, looking directly at her. The owl had a bronze colour and bright red eyes and as soon as Annabeth made eye contact, it flew away.

Annabeth's eyes widened for a moment before thoughts started racing through her young mind. It was the same owl she saw before and they had some theories about who that owl belonged to, so shaking Christina awake Annabeth decided to just tell her about it so they could decide together what to do.
