It took me quite a while, two months to be precise, to come to a realisation... I really missed having someone close to me. As I looked at her blonde hair and grey eyes I can't help but be thankful for having her. While my first impression was that she was a cute kid, it changed into the current image I have of her... she is without a doubt troublesome! But it is the kind of trouble one needs in their lives, the kind of trouble that you enjoy going through, the kind of trouble that comes from family.
"This is awesome!" exclaimed Annabeth while looking at me with excited eyes.
"I know right? I didn't actually expect to find this..." I reply while looking at the pile of treasures in front of us. Most people would call it junk, but there were without a doubt some great things here. "I told you following that gryphon would be a good idea. Now let's get what we can before it returns." I continue saying while opening my backpack.
"What should we get though?" she asks while looking at the variety of shiny things piled up.
"Grab everything that has the same colour as my hammer, I will keep guard." I reply while moving to the entrance of the cave. I personally thought flying monsters like gryphons would leave in trees or rooftops, but I guess they sometimes live in caves as well.
After a few minutes, Annabeth came out with the backpack closed. "Let's go, the less time we spend here the better." she said while giving me the backpack.
"So? What did you find?" I ask while we start heading away from the cave.
"From the same material as your hammer I only found the trip of a spear and a broken shield." she said with an excited expression. "But I also found some bones and other metal objects that didn't seem useful." explained Annabeth, while shivering slightly at the memory of the bones.
"Nice! I will try to turn the tip of the spear into a knife or dagger you can use. As for the broken shield... I have an idea of what to do with it but I am not sure if it will actually be possible." I say while thinking about the countless ways having this weird material that kills monsters instantly will help us. "The bones... well I guess it was to be expected, besides they might be of animals you know? It's not like monsters only eat people..."
Annabeth looked at me weirdly for a moment upon hearing my bone explanation. "Yeah... well I am excited to see the knife you make!" said Annabeth while changing the topic back to the weapons, for which I was very grateful.
"Great! Now let's hurry up." I said as we continue to make our way back to the abandoned building we were currently living in.
Another week passed by and finally the knife I made for her was finished. While it wasn't easy, I had a talent for crafting, which gave me a pretty good idea of who my oh so great godly father would be. The knife itself was pretty poorly made, in truth it was simply the tip of the spear to which I added the best handle I could make. Working with the weird metal was extremely difficult and even doing minimal modifications was only possible with my own hammer, which I was pretty sure was a gift from good ol' dad.
Unlike Annabeth, I wasn't interested at all in my godly father and, while it is true that I am grateful for the abilities I think I inherited from him as well as the hammer which is pretty much the only reason I am still alive, it is hard to actually care for someone who abandons you, giving you nothing more than a cool hammer in your entire life despite having been with a drug addict and under constant attacks from literal monsters that want to eat me.
Living on the streets was still hard as usual, but with Annabeth... things got better. There were even nights were I didn't have nightmares, the same went for Annabeth, who at the beginning would wake up everyday saying she was being eaten by spiders and now can actually sleep well sometimes.
People sometimes gave us money when they saw us, which was nice. I suppose not everyone can handle seeing two kids on the streets during the winter in ragged clothes and act like they don't care, though most did just that.
As we made our way to a cafe, hoping to find refuge from the cold rain and buy something hot to drink, I saw from the corner of my eyes a tv with the news channel on, and in it was a reporter showing the picture of a blonde little girl with beautiful deep-blue eyes, a little girl that had gone missing over four months ago... a little girl called Christina Adler.
Well... fuck.
While I was obviously expecting having to hide from the police in order to not return home, I totally forgot about it these past months, having to run around and literally fighting to survive, all while taking care of another kid... all in all my mind wasn't giving any thought to what I left behind.
Right now I was faced with a complicated choice, should we risk staying in hoping that no one notices or should we leave right now and stay cold and hungry under the rain. For some reason neither one of us got sick, but that doesn't mean we can't get sick, especially with a weather like this.
"Hey Annabeth..." I say in a low tone calling her attention.
"What is it Chris?" she says, curious about why I am acting like this since I don't usually call her by her name unless it is something serious.
"The tv." I say while pointing at the tv with my eyes, causing her to look there.
Her eyes widen for a moment before looking at me. "What do we do now?" she asks.
"You decide smart girl." I say while smiling a bit. While the situation is indeed serious and we could get in a lot of trouble, I can't help but rely on her quite a bit. She may be inexperienced and a kid, but she comes up with some pretty good plans, though considering who her godly mother most likely is I shouldn't be all that surprised.
She falls deep in thought, her eyes gaining that calculating appearance. "Well... we had already agreed that we need to take cover somewhere whenever there is rain, fighting off possible monsters is much harder in the rain after all, besides your appearance right now doesn't look completely similar to the image they are showing of yourself... so they will probably not recognise you." she said after thinking for a moment.
"I thought so as well... okey then let's stay." I say while we both make our way to the closest table.
