The call came from the housekeeper, and it wasn't about Grandma or Isabel Smith, but about Evelyn Osbert.

Elijah Smith lit a cigarette, took a drag, and listened as the housekeeper explained the situation from beginning to end. With an indifferent "hmm," he hung up the phone.

He looked out the window and finished his cigarette. Then he slowly walked back to the library.

"Who called?" Ella Adams tilted her head, asking in a low voice with a smile.

"From the homestead," Elijah Smith replied, then lowered his head and continued to flip through the economics book in front of him.

Before long, the mobile phone in his pocket rang again. Elijah Smith pulled it out and saw it was a call from Evelyn Osbert.

Elijah Smith's expression quivered slightly, and in the end, he silenced his phone and placed it on the table.

The mobile phone screen went dark, and then another call came in.

Though it was on silent, it still caught Ella Adams' attention: "Why aren't you answering your phone?"
