章 26: Problems

A whisper drifted on the wind. Everyone turned to face the window opening. A vine snaked its way in over the edge and onto the table close to the window. The vine bent up in a snakelike fashion. A flower opened up at the end of the vine and turned its face toward Callie.

I am willing to go. The soft voice filled the fragrant air.

“I don’t know if you’ll survive,” she warned. “I have no idea what could happen. It’s asking a lot.”

To save us all I will sacrifice myself. It would be an honor.

“Thank you.” Callie looked at the others around her. “Let’s give it a try. What do you think?”

The adults exchanged looks. Stephen gave a slight nod while Joyceta shook her head in warning. Remedio shook his own head, but agreed.

“Let’s try it. A volunteer has come forth.”

Joyceta crossed her arms, still not willing to agree. Stephen nodded again as did Jasper and Indio. Jardan stepped forward.
