章 15: Chapter 15

- Xenon -

We spent around half an hour organizing everything we'd be taking by order of priority, and then put them in our bags. We obviously wouldn't be taking everything with us, but we made sure to make it easy to grab. For now, we'll take some of it, then we'll come back for the rest later. We still had to go to get clothes and then find a pharmacy. It took us three hours to prepare everything necessary. By the time we were done, we were starving, so we took some time to have lunch. Since we were at the store already, we got to take whatever we wanted for lunch.

I just made a sandwich with smoked turkey slices and cheese, with corn on the side. I sat on an empty corner of the store, to eat my meal in peace.

"You want some coke? It's still good." Amy said, handing me a can of said drink. I thanked her and accepted the drink. I totally forgot about them to be honest. She sat next to me, and starting eating her own food.

"This is nice." Commented Amy. "Living an outlaw's life, taking whatever you want whenever you want." I wasn't sure she was joking or not, but I chuckled anyway.

"Yeah… Always wanted to take everything in a store…" I commented. "That's one dream came true, at least." She giggled.

"What did you dream of becoming, by the way? Before all this, I mean…" she added.

"That's an interesting question…" What did I want to become? I don't even remember what my dreams were before I came here. Realistic dreams, I mean. I've dreamed of a great many things, none of which could be done in my 'previous situation'. Now that a myriad of possibilities have opened to me, I was a lot more ambitious. I had the possibility to go to different worlds, and since this one exist, and a SYSTEM of all things exist as well… It isn't far-fetched to think that every other fiction work I've read before it out there, waiting for me to join in the fun… Perhaps I would eventually learn magic… Now that would be a REAL dream came true… not counting the one I'm living, obviously…

"Artificial Intelligence had a lot of interesting applications, even though it was in the beginning stages. I believe it has a lot of potential, and wished to explore it." I gave an answer I came up with on the spot.

"So, you were into computers and stuff?" Amy asked curiously.

"You mean to ask if I am some kind of nerd, don't you?" I looked at her 'accusingly'.

"Wha- No no no! I didn't mean that at all!" she was flustered trying to backtrack, but I just started laughing at her face, before she realized I was making fun of her.

"Hey! That wasn't nice!" she admonished me. "I really believed you thought that." She huffed.

"Sorry about that. What about you?"

"I wanted to be a doctor." She grinned. "Or a vet. Or maybe a nurse."

"Ambitious." I praised. "It's not an easy path."

"Yeah." She nodded. "I was really committed, you know. Started doing my own research on the subject to get a better idea, try to get better grades and everything. But I suppose none of it matters now…" Okay, that took a sharp turn real quick.

"Why not?" I asked, hoping for her to open up a bit more to me. She was a nice girl, and I could use a friend too every now and then.

"With the walkers out there… at some point, they'll come for us, then we'll have to run away." She said sadly. "Or we will run out of food before then, I mean, we're just consuming without giving anything back, we'll run out eventually. Then, we'll have to venture deeper into the city, where it's more dangerous…"

"Our situation is temporary, you know. The walkers might look like a problem now, but the truth is, there is a very simple solution to fight them off." She looked at me, waiting for me to continue. "Walls."

"Walls?"

"Yes. Walls. They're really dumb, they can't think of how to get around obstacles unless there is a very clear opening. If you have a wall sturdy enough to protect you, they won't be able to get to you." I explained, making gestures with my hands.

"That's easy to say, but how are we gonna build walls? If it's as easy as you claim, some people would've thought of it…" her eyes widened in realization, she looked at me, smiling widely at her.

"You get it now, don't you?" I asked. "There are probably people out there that have thought of it already. The problem is manpower and materials. If you have both, then that's problem solved for you. As for food? Walkers don't care about plants. You could work fields, even if they are unprotected, and hide behind your walls when they come. And you'd have your own sustainable source of food. That's not to mention, the corpses will eventually run out of food and start degrading, they'll be easier to deal with after a while. So, if you think about it, we can still achieve our dreams and go beyond if we survive long enough." By now, everyone had finished their meals, and we were about to continue scavenging. I got up to join the others and Amy did the same. But I hadn't even taken a step before Amy took me in a hug. I was surprised at first, but I returned it. She must've been distressed.

We held each other silently for a while, before she said: "Thank you. It's been refreshing, talking you." She had a sweet smile on her face, while her cheeks gained a red hue. Her blue orbs gazed at mine and I could notice they were moist.

"It was my pleasure." I nodded, though I was a bit uncomfortable, albeit happy at the 'display of affection', if it could be called that.
