章 31: Premature Death II

Gojo had arrived to the scene, easily dispelling Geto's curses and barrier with a swat of his hand. His eyes were on full display as he glared down at Geto who despite taking the full brunt of pressure, didn't even show a tint of nervousness.

Although Gojo was the strongest, Geto was still a special-grade sorcerer.

"What do you think you are doing, Geto."

"I'm simply greeting a fellow classmate. Why are you interrupting us, Gojo?"

The once best friends now had their words oozing a venomous tone to each other.

Both didn't have their usual smile plastered on their face. Now, Gojo's was of anger and Geto's was of sadness but acceptance of their differences.

"Isao, what are you doing here?" Gojo asked but did not turn behind him to face Arai.

"A coincidence, no... more like Geto tracked me and Ieiri down. Probably wanted to say his goodbyes before leaving."

"I get it, now leave. This is between me and him, so do me a favor just this once."

His speech was brunt like always despite facing his now best friend betrayal. Arai accepted what he told him and decided to leave.

Though he decided to be true to himself, he would do that at all times only when he had gained enough strength. And now... he was but a a drop of water in an ocean filled with powerful foes.

Logic will prevail... that is until he wouldn't need it anymore.

"Don't leave us yet Arai, we're comrades, aren't we?"

"We're both guilty of the same crime. So why not just stay friends?"

Arai's eyes widened as he turned around frantically to see Geto smiling deviously at him and Gojo's attention turning to him.

"So... how many did you kill? Those monkeys."

Arai nervously held the daggers that he had just sheathed back. 'Geto, you're ratting me out, huh. Piece of shit.'

What Arai was truly afraid now, was to incur the wrath of Gojo.

"What is he talking about, Arai?"

His blue eyes penetrating his very soul making it tremble in fear. The eyes that once looked at him as comrades were gone and were now replaced with one who looked at him as an enemy.

"... I don't know." Arai nervously answered.

"Don't lie to me, Arai. The truth. Now."

His voice even more demanding then before, as it was a command. Not a request.

Arai was on the verge of running up to Geto and rip his head off. If it weren't for him babbling, the current situation wouldn't have been up against him.

Knowing this, he let go of his daggers and stepped forward.

Trying to run would not get him anywhere.

"Yeah, I did it."

Arai admitted and said bluntly surprising Geto and Gojo a bit.

"But so what, have any of you never killed?"

"Those were evil sorcerers, not innocent civilians." Gojo said with a sneer.

Even after Gojo said this, Arai didn't back down. "But they all fit into one category; people that annoyed you, people that you hate, people who angered you. So what's the difference between what I did and what you did."

"Are you seriously asking me that?"

"Yeah, I am."

A silence ensued as Geto watch them with interest. Gojo though angry contemplated what Arai had just said. But Arai was the only one nervous in this situation, as sweat ran down his back. Still he wanted to prove his point, and by doing so would get out of here alive.

"The problem here is you, Gojo."

"Hah! Me? Don't blame me for your incompetence."

Arai inwardly flinched from the comment and gripped his fist. He knew his situation better than anyone. "You are what many would define as a God. Yet here you are, in the lands of mortals."

"A God is someone, something that will watch over us not inhabit with us."

Arai lifted his arm and pointed at Gojo. "You're a man acting like he wants to be a God but truly wants to be human."

"... what in the hell are you talking about?"

"You're like someone chosen to be a God but chooses not to because he wants to stay human. Those 'Six Eyes' signifies your ascension to godhood but you remain here as a human."

"You can become stronger than you are now but you don't want to. You don't seek to become stronger because you are already the strongest. Your growth has stagnated and that won't change. That's the difference between you and us humans."

"The fact that you don't have a path anymore. You've already finished yours yet to us humans, that path will never end. An endless pursuit for knowledge and power but you already have both. But that is also why you'll never become greater than you are now, because that's what you think. Everything is possible for you right?"

He looked down in shame as a memory of his now deceased friend appeared in his mind. Had he saved Haibara, would he even be here? In this situation...

"If everything was possible, then why didn't you save Haibara?"

When they heard this, Arai could see both of them flinch from the question.

Yes they were strong, so strong that they were unbeatable, but did that mean that everyone else around them was?

Not everyone was as strong as them. They could die at any moment unlike them who have always had the confidence that they were invincible.

People like Arai have always been faced with the fear of death. But those two had never thought about themselves dying. That just goes to show how much power they wielded.

So this question shook them.

Their moral view of this world.

"Why don't you just end all cursed spirits in the world? Why don't you just end war? End violence, end the cycle of hatred?"

Gojo was the most powerful sorcerer and he could do anything. Frankly, it wouldn't even be farfetched to state that he would be able to wipe out all of humanity.

He could have everything in the world but he doesn't do it.

Not because he's not selfish.

But because he is 'selfish'.

"You know the answer to that, don't you? Because it will make everyone fear you. You don't care about what everyone thinks, is the image you always give off but in truth, that would mean that you wouldn't care about people like Geto, Ieiri and the others. If you did, then why are you even at this school. Nobody can teach you anything anymore."

"The fact that you don't want to do that shows that you are human. And one day, someone will take advantage of that to further their own goals. Of course, that can't be me. I'm too weak, but what happens if someone of your caliber is born. Can you face a greedier, more selfish, more chaotic-"

Looking up at the sky, Arai sighed exhaling all the air in his lungs. He felt as if he released all the built up tension from all the time he was at a sorcerer and felt relaxed.

Even while knowing that at any moment, he could be imprisoned and locked away. Waiting for his execution.

"And most important of all, a more powerful version of Gojo Satoru."

All there was right here was silence, Gojo looked at Arai but his thoughts were unknown. While Geto looked more intrigued and interested.

The silence continued as Arai started to realize that Gojo meant it as he could leave. Arai turned back and walked away but despite this, his heart was still beating fast.

He had said this straight to Gojo's face and surprisingly Gojo didn't react violently. It was odd but having someone finally point out your flaws may have made Gojo realize how vulnerable he actually was.

Because despite being the strongest, he couldn't protect two of his fellow sorcerers from turning their eyes into killing humans. Him being invincible didn't extend to his friends.

Arai had said all of this from the bottom of his heart, Gojo could probably feel how nervous he felt with his eyes but still decided to let him off.

Truthfully if Gojo was someone who followed rules, then he wouldn't even have the authority to take Arai forcefully. Though Arai had killed those people, he was now just a suspect.

Nothing more.

Arai had not used his cursed energy to kill those non-sorcerers directly and had used the cursed spirits to do so. Actually, the evidence would show that Arai had tried to help them as his cursed energy would be found all over the cursed spirits attacking them.

But the people who knew him would find out the different attitude he was displaying and would piece the missing puzzles together.

"You're going to let him off. Just like that? I guess he and I weren't the only ones to have changed." Geto walked up to Gojo and shrugged his shoulders.

"Don't act so confident, I let him off but that doesn't mean that it will be the same for you. I'm not nice to people who kills their own family."

Gojo glared at Geto. "Or one that attacks their own friend for their goals."

Geto chuckled, Gojo threatening him was practically part of his daily routine but now he didn't even know if he would really kill him. "With those eyes of yours, I'm sure you could of already seen that I wasn't actually going to kill him."

"Plus he's not wrong with that speech you know so it was a good thing I left him alive, I don't think I could of said it better than he has, but he did get one thing wrong."

"I'm not invincible and I can't do anything I want."

To this, Gojo narrowed down his eyes.

"Not anymore with the current you, you are beyond special-grade but those higher-ups keep classifying you as such. Frankly there should be a god grade just for you. Maybe demi-god now since with that speech from Isao."

Geto looked at Gojo with a smile. "One can say that you are omnipotent, wielding 'Limitless'. One can say that you are omniscient, with the 'Six Eyes'. But you are not omnipresent, you can't be everywhere at once. Everyone still has a goal to achieve and you can't always help them."

"Now, I have a goal to achieve."

He walked away blending in the crowd. Saying his goodbye to his best friend.

"And you can't help me with it."

Standing alone there was Gojo who for the first time, looked down. Finally realizing, that he was living on earth and not the heavens.

He alone was the honored one.

But that fact meant that no one else was.
