“I was. I’m always happy when I’m with him.”
Beto started laughing in a mocking tone. “I’m glad you get to be happy. That you get to leave and just come back and pretend you’ve always been here. That you get a chance to meet someone and have all this fun. If you were still working, would you even be here? And if you were, would you have thought twice about staying and fucking around with Eugenio?”
“Of course I would have come. I loved Mami.”
“So not Papi then, ‘cause you weren’t here for that.”
“You don’t get it and you never will,” Carlos said in a raised voice. “You don’t know what it is like to hide yourself, then to finally think you will be free but to have everyone turn their back on you. That fear of rejection stays. I wasn’t the charmed one like you. I wasn’t the straight stud that played football and had all the friends.”
Eugenio walked in between them. “I think you need to stop before this goes too far.”
