I stepped into the break room to make sure the coffeemaker had been turned off when I saw Dr. Logan, Casey, pouring the last drops of it into a mug. He smiled at me, dark circles under his eyes.
“You look exhausted,” I said, surprising myself.
“I am. I think I’m finally done.” He took a sip of the coffee and made a face. “Gack, this tastes nasty.”
“What you need is a fresh pot. That’s been there for a while.”
He smirked. “You offering to make me some?”
“I would, but I think everyone’s hoping to go home.”
“Yeah, me too. But I didn’t mean here. I thought maybe you’d offer to make me some coffee at your place.”
“Uh. Well I…my place is kind of a mess,” I stammered like an idiot.
He smiled. “I’m kidding. But maybe we can go out for coffee. Or you know what? I’m hungry. Are you hungry?”
I nodded, my heart hammering.
“Let’s go get some dinner.”
