The phone call that followed had lasted until deep into the night. I don't even remember all the things we talked about but in the end Parker had to make a decision.

We were both surprised that his parents didn't force him to go stay at a clinic where he'd be supervised 24/7 even though they had discussed it briefly.

Instead they begged their son to come back home so they could keep an eye on him. After all, they don't know that even if he killed himself, he'd be back within minutes anyway.

"I think that's a good idea," is what I said. "Maybe you're not ready for college."

"No, I need to do this." Parker had sounded very firm. "This is my third attempt and this time I'll finish what I started. My brain won't ruin college for me."
