"Alright, that dose should be enough to let an adult sleep for 8 hours," Jessie said after determining the last dose/amount of Sleep Powder for my plan regarding Optimus/Butterfree.
We went over all possible doses of Sleep and Stun Powder with her targeting toddlers, children, adults, and even trainers so that we knew how much to apply to each patient. Optimus simply had to keep the strength of the moves constant while producing the powder.
Stun Powder would be applied to the wounded area to numb just that area. Meanwhile, the Sleep Powder would be sniffed/inhaled through the nose and put the patient to sleep for a few hours depending on the dose.
Looking at the white powder that sent those sniffing it to lalaland I kinda felt like a bad guy dealing with drugs for a moment but shook it off just as quickly since drugs are bad and I was doing something good.
Actually, that was a pretty open, fast, safe way to earn some extra money while doing some good. I could sell the numbing and sleep powder for cheap to smaller clinics, or facilities that need help with letting their patients sleep.
For now, I could just let Optimus produce the powder and in the future, I could let their subordinate Butterfree do that. I kept trying to find an excuse for myself why I should start a Caterpie/Butterfree colony for Mothra inside Utopia, and this was as good a reason as any.
Earning some small change while getting some good karma, which was the actually important part. I could also reserve some of the good Caterpie for the Orphanages I'm planning to build in the future.
Sigh, being in this situation made me think about my future good karma plans.
"Now, that we are done with the test to determine the efficiency of your Pokemon we can talk about your assignments. Optimus can move to the laboratory tent.
He only has to produce the powders and the staff there will divide the powder into the needed doses. They have already been informed of the necessary dosages.
Drowzee's hypnosis and dreamless sleep services are only needed during nap time for the kids, and during the evening for some of the patients that need help with falling asleep due to various reasons.
So he'll be asked to visit the tents 198 to 232 at around 1 p.m each day, and then the tents 52 to 67, 102 to 116, 167 to 169, as well as 198 to 232 around 9 p.m to help the patients inside those tents to fall asleep.
Does Drowzee know Teleport? That would make travel between the tents much easier for him and save a lot of time," she asked and I had to disappoint her in that regard. Still, I had an easy fix for that.
"I'll have Mothra take him around. We just need to show her where those tents are first so that she knows where to Teleport to. I'm sure she'll attract the attention of everyone inside the tent, which would make it easier for Drowzee to lull them into sleep.
Seeing such a big cutie before falling asleep is a blessing for them in itself, so I'm sure it will work out great," I joke for a bit and Jessie just nods seriously before cracking a small smile.
"Alright, I'm pretty sure your tasks are going to be the easiest ones at the start, but I'll try to make sure you get bigger cases than some scratches once you've proven yourself."
I doubted they used the crazy knight standard for scratches, so I was thankful for that since it would have gotten monotonous pretty fast. Then Jessie brought me around the medic zone to show me the important places/tents I needed to know.
I had Horus/Xatu, Mothra/Butterfree, Luna/Clefable, Tatsumaki/Kadabra, and Optimus out, they were following us to remember the ideal spots for teleportation. We did a quick stop at the command center to register their psychic/energy imprint so that they could teleport around without triggering the response team each time.
I actually saw a few acquaintances during the tour Jessica gave me. It seemed that among the Knight Academy students that were mobilized to patrol the town were some of the students I saw at the joint excursion last year.
I even met Erza who told me that only tertiary students were allowed to take the mission and that only the best of the first-year ones got the permission to join in. The best part was that my girl Erza managed to become the team leader of the Knight Academy students despite being only a first-year student.
Anyway, we did not talk for long since she had to keep patrolling, so Jessie and I resumed our "tour" as well. We left Optimus in the laboratory tent so that he could start producing the powder, and I made sure that Mothra knew which tents she had to later take Drowzee to.
The tour took roughly an hour and occasionally Jessie had to do her job as supervisor while she was showing me around, so I got to see her acting like a boss for a bit. I even saw her presiding over one of the treatments of a mildly injured patient, who had broken his left shin and cracked his right shin.
Honestly, I was not sure if I would call that a mild injury, but considering the medical capabilities of this world, it kinda made sense. I mean they had a different understanding of the word fatal injury and the same was true for serious injury.
After they made sure that the left shin was correctly aligned, Jessie's Chansey broke the egg she kept in her pouch over the shin and the egg turned into energy that fused with the shin.
That alone mended the broken bone and according to Jessica, it would be completely healed within a week, which was a great improvement compared to before. Chansey also used a Heal Pulse on the right shin to heal the cracked bones, and just like the left one that injury would be completely healed in a week.
Still, that left me a bit confused as to why the two moves did not completely heal the man's injuries cause that was what I expected to happen. Well, turns out that healing moves are not as effective on humans and animals as they were on Pokemon.
Depending on the individual the effect of a healing move could be anywhere from 30 to 50% of the usual effect on Pokemon. The reason given for this is the lack of a personal energy pool that reacts with the energy of the healing move for a maximum effect. That or the fact that the body is not used to absorbing energy, healing one or not.
Accordingly, the effect of a healing move on trainers was higher than that. It could be anywhere from 50 to 100% for high-class trainers. The energy they gained through the bonds with their Pokemon was seen as the reason for this increase in efficiency.
That together with the fact that healing moves worked perfectly fine on ability owners such as aura users and psychics was the reason that the lack of personal energy was seen as the reason for the reduced effect of healing moves on regular people. That made sense and I thanked her for the explanation.
Still, I was curious why she did not keep healing him until he was completely healed. Turns out he would need to stay here anyway until the temporary dormitories were up since his home was in the part that got destroyed, so turning his injury from a mild to a light one, that did not hurt anymore was the best solution since it allowed her to use Chansey's energy for more patients.
According to Jessie, her Chansey could normally only produce one egg every 8 hours, but since she was busy with healing in the meantime that time got increased to an egg every 10 hours instead. Apparently, she could produce one every 6 hours if she strained herself, but was not efficient at all so they didn't do that.
"Besides, if I completely heal all patients, then what will you do? I have to leave some light injuries so that you can go around and deal with them, don't I?" Jessica joked and I had to laugh because that came out of nowhere and I had not expected her to crack a joke like that.
I might have gotten one or two disapproving stares for my laughter in the middle of the medical zone, but nothing I could do about that. Anyway, after that, I began my career as a medical assistant. For the rest of the day, I went through 24 tents and healed the scratches and abrasions of 96 people.
Honestly, that would not have been possible if I did not have so many Pokemon capable of using Life Dew even if I only had to take care of scratches and abrasions, since each person needed 1 or 2 rounds of Life Dew to be completely healed depending on the number of scratches that had to be healed.
Nonetheless, I seem to have impressed quite a few people with my performance since I was upgraded from treating scratches and abrasions to small wounds on the second day, or rather small wounds were added to the list since I still had to heal scratches and abrasions.
That went on until the fifth day when I got another "promotion". I was given cases with slight cracks that needed mending. The bigger the injury the longer we needed to heal it, or rather the more often we had to use Life Dew or Heal Pulse. Total cheat these healing moves as far as healing was concerned.
By this point, we, can't ignore my Pokemon in this, had treated close to 400 people including more than a hundred children, and I somehow managed to earn myself the moniker doctor Geo. The children were the first ones to call me like that and it somehow stuck and now most patients called me that even though I told them that I was not a doctor.
According to them, I was healing them, so I was in fact a doctor in their eyes. Well, I made sure that I was clean in case someone tried to accuse me of fraud, so I just enjoyed the prestige a bit.
Honestly, it was not all sunshine since I was way busier than I had thought I would be. I only got to see Jessie twice a day for a few minutes during breakfast and dinner even though we were in the same area since we were busy with work otherwise.
As for meeting Erza, that happened once a day if I was lucky due to the previously mentioned busyness. Honestly, the hardest case I was allowed to deal with by the end of my assignment was a cracked bone on my sixth day, and my workload decreased at the start of the second week since a lot more personnel became available to deal with the mild injuries once the serious and fatal cases had been handled.
Thankfully nearly all operations were successful and we lost only one of the fatally injured patients. The rest made it through and nearly all of them would be able to make a full recovery.
There were two cases where two of the previously fatally wounded patients would need some follow-up procedures in the future, but even that was impressive considering one of them had a collapsed lung while the other's liver got destroyed.
I had thought that I would be transferred to the clean-up crew sometime during the middle of the second week due to the increasing number of available nurses and apprentices, but I got to stay in the medic area for the whole assignment.
Truthfully, I think my biggest gain in all this was the fact that I seemed to have impressed some of the Nurse Joys with my commitment and effort at healing as many people as possible to the best of my, or rather our ability.
I knew that because Jessie told me so and she even introduced me to some Nurse Joys that were her superiors. Moreover, I can't lie and say that I did not enjoy being called Doctor Geo. The improvement everyone made with Life Dew was just a nice bonus on the side.
All in all, I would say that was an interesting mission but honestly with the number of injured people I had seen in the last two weeks I did not look forward to witnessing the result of a proper tide or large-scale conflict. My respect for doctors and nurses definitely went up by a notch or two after my latest experience.
