Alex looked at Professor Birch fiddling around the Moss Rock where he had set up dozens of machines.
Professor Birch was portrayed as a careless man even in the works of his previous life. He wore shorts and a T-shirt, sandals, and got chased around by a Poocheyana as he couldn't get to the bag of Pokeballs he carried.
But only after seeing with his own eyes did he realize how flatteringly he was depicted back then.
The Professor Birch in front of him looked like a savage that walked out of the deeper parts of the forest after being lost for a few years. All his cloth were scrapped, and what was once his lab coat was now a barely white towel. He apparently came right away after hearing from his old friend, Professor Oak that there was a new Eevee evolution that happened here. He either didn't bother or didn't remember to bring a Pokemon to protect himself.
Alex found him being hounded by a dozen Migtyana, which were chasing him after he apparently accidentally stepped on the leader's tail. Alex had to let all his three Pokemon battle, and even take help from the Eevee to fight them off, as he had left Nidoking near the Moss Rock when we went to train.
Alex thought he was a random unlucky trainer when he rescued him. He had no idea he was one of the top Pokemon Professors in the world. He had to call Professor Oak and verify it was actually him, and even then he couldn't believe this bum was that famous and hailed as a genius.
After being led to the Moss Rock, Professor Birch realized he had forgotten to bring the equipment that was needed for the project.
Just as Alex was about to volunteer to bring them, a level 45 Arcanine bounded over, with a letter and a huge box from the Professor's assistance.
Having received the box with the equipment, the Professor uncompressed it and set them all up.
Compression technology was very advanced in this world, but it was not popularised. Only a few of the richest and most influential people or organisations could afford it.
According to some rumours he had heard from Professor Oak, Devon Corporation had recently made a breakthrough in the mass production of compression technology. Hence, in a few years compression technology products may be available for public use.
"All right. We set. If you could get an Eevee to breakthrough in the middle of this platform, this set up can analyse the exact strain of energy required for it to do so. Then, I will see if this strain can be artificially produced or if this Moss Rock can be shifted" said Professor Birch.
"Professor, I can't force Eevee to evolve in there just because I want it to can I? The way I made the other two Eevee breakthrough their bottlenecks is having a battle to stimulate them close to the Moss Rock. I'm afraid they cannot have a battle in the middle of the set up" remained Alex.
"Of course, how silly of me to forget" he said, shuffling into a bag and retrieving two test tubes filled with a golden liquid. "This is a stimulator used to break through bottlenecks. Unfortunately, it can not help for any bottleneck except the mid Novice bottleneck. It is too weak for the Veteran bottleneck, and too strong for a Baby Pokemon. Hence it is mostly considered useless, but in this case it does exactly what we need" said Professor Birch.
Alex let put an Eevee and had it stand in the middle of the platform, said a few comforting words, and fed it the liquid from a test tube.
"Vevue" cried the Pokemon as it seemed to be suffering a little pain.
It then lit up with the good of evolution, and slowly morphed into Leafeon.
Professor Birch was concentrated tapping away at a computer, looking through the displayed data.
"Well, I found the energy strain's source. It s under this rock. So moving this rock is pointless. We can probably create this energy strain artificially by mimicking a set up of the energy's creation here" said Professor Birch, and he then proceeded to explain the cause and effect of the energy production.
Alex nodded, and called Professor Oak to tell him about the result.
"Leave a few Eevee with Birch. Take Nidoking with you, Birch has strong Pokemon himself. I will coordinate with him on the mimicking of energy paths. You should go to Sinnoh. Birch told me he had taught you how he set up the machines and analyzed the data, and that you said you understood. Go to Snowpoint City and find the Ice Rock and contact me. I will have the machines sent to you. You can then analyse it and send the data back to me" said Professor Oak.
When he heard about going to Snowpoint City, all Alex could think of was the boat journey here, and how he had to go double that distance, as the Sinnoh region was in the north of Kanto, as opposed to Hoenn's south.
