'Does she know I'm here?'
'I told her you were coming.' Lucy ignored the pointed looks Pat was sending her.
Alex was uncomfortable but persevered with devoting precious moments to what he hoped wasn't a lost cause. 'How is she?'
'Fine. And I'd like it to stay that way.'
'Lucy!'
She turned to her husband. 'If I don't say it, who will? Just because she looks all right doesn't mean she's up to much. She's putting on a good front but who's to say that isn't all it is?'
'I've told you, give her some credit. She deserves the right to work it out herself.'
Lucy glanced at Alex. 'But seeing him will ...'
'She has to hear what he's got to say. We don't know what went on; we can't tell her.' Pat jerked his head. 'She's out by the pool.'
