“Yeah.” Chelsea moved away from Jake. “But it can’t replace the trophies or the pictures that were destroyed.” Her heart sat like a lead weight in her chest. They’d have to start from scratch.

Fueled by the oxygen tanks, the ambulances were just shells of what they’d once been. She thought of all the life that had ended and begun in those vehicles. Ambulances bought and paid for by her father.

“But the memories weren’t destroyed,” Jake said.

She looked at the oversized rubber boots on her feet. He was right, but she needed to wallow in her grief for a moment. She owned no physical reminders of her father and his handiwork. The squad he’d built was gone except for the volunteers. A tear dropped on the toe of one of the boots. She hadn’t realized she started crying. “I’m.” Sniff. “Sorry.”

He pulled her to him. “Don’t be.”
