The candle on the table dripped wax on the small plate underneath it. The walls around them were lit up with a yellow glow. Justin put forward a plate of bread and cheese on the table for the three kids grinning in front of him.
They looked almost like the old days waiting for food. He sat beside the empty seat beside Rosa who had all puffy eyes from the crying. She was rubbing the burned eyes and smiling while they exchanged stories of what has befallen them in these past times.
His eyes fell on Rosa’s short hair first. He raised his hand to pat her head. His eyes fell on her long scar. He heard the story but still could not believe that the small kids from his villages are now in front of him as ranked soldiers.
